I guess you're talking about the
first-run page. This page will only be opened when there's a new version of Firebug - so it should just be shown once in several weeks or months - or after installing Firebug. This page will be opened in a new background tab.
If you don't want to see this page, you just have to go to
about:config and set the preference
extensions.firebug.showFirstRunPage to
false.

I had actually completely uninstalled Firebug at one point out of frustration at the problem, but ended up needing it again and so re-installed it, making sure I had the most current, non-beta version, at the time of install, and its STILL doing it several times a week.
I seriously do not appreciate ANYTHING taking over my browser and re-directing like that. Is there a setting I need to change or is this just how Firebug works (in which case I will be uninstalling it completely and finding something else to do the job).
