I just installed Firebug 1.4.5 on Firefox 3.5.5. For some reason,
nothing shows up in the menu for Firebug.

I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, deleting the 4 files, creating
a clean profile and trying again, and I'm still having the problem.

I can't get to the console screen at all. There is an icon with a
small menu in the bottom right corner, but as noted, there are no
commands in the Firebug portion of the Tools menu.

Help/Ideas?

Try the new profile again carefully. It will work. See also

Don't bother with uninstall or deleting files, it won't help and may
hurt.

I tried everything listed in the FAQ. Tried reinstalling. Tried a new
(distinctly named) profile on at least a dozen occasions. Tried
removing all extensions other than firebug. Tried manual install. It
just won't give me a menu, allow me to open the terminal, etc.

Since many thousands of users have been successful on many different
machines, we have to conclude that there is some problem on your
machine. But what that problem might be I cannot say. Perhaps you have
an unusual operating system or software that interferes with other
software, such as viruses or anti-viruses.

Firebug worked temporarily, but now it's stopped working again, and
seems to be stopping the firefox browser from shutting down correctly
as well.

Firefox - 3.5.7
Firebug - 1.5.0
Operating System - Win XP
Virus Scanner - AVG 9.0.733
Virus Scanned within last 12 hours, and came up clean.

A new profile was made, and the other add ons/plugins were all
disabled, Firbug was then installed. No dice.

There is no menu for the item, and the logo in the bottom right is
permanently greyed out.

Are there any ways to debug this problem? I am an advanced user.

If you install Firebug directly into a new profile, it will
work ...unless you have extensions loaded by the registry.

You can try the tracing version, http://getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.6X
or 1.5X.
Use about:config to set javascript.options.showInConsole true.
Restart, look in Firefox > Tools >Error Console.
Or try the tracing console see

Thanks for your help. Appears I found the problem. There was a missing
file from Windows Presentation Foundation. A repair of .Net Framework
3.5 SP1 appears to have fixed the problem.
