OK - I'm feeling really stupid about this, but I just installed
Firebug 1.6 (this is my first time to install Firebug) and I cannot
figure out how to open it.

I read on Firebug's website that there is a small bug in the right
corner of the FireFox status bar (at the bottom). I do not have that.
I have SEO For Firefox that is in that location and also Rank Checker
(seobook.com) and Auto Copy. I'm not sure if Firebug is not showing up
because I have those icons in that location (although it would seem to
me that the icons would just set up next to each other).

Anyway, if someone could help me figure this out, that would be much-
appreciated.

Pick Tools -> Add-ons menu to open the addons dialog. Firebug should
be listed there and enabled.

Also try to press F12, which is a keyboard shortcut for opening
Firebug UI

Yes

Exactly

You can also try to create a fresh new Firefox profile and install
only Firebug. If it works it looks like there is a collision with
another extension you have installed in the old profile.

I suppose you are using Firefox 3.6, correct?
(you need Firebug 1.7 for Firefox 4)

I have had the problem with not having the icon before Firebug was
first opened. For me opening Firebug using the hotkey (F12) fixes
it ... you could try that before creating a new profile.

I am having this exact same problem. There is no icon in the lower
right hand corner and F12 does not work. I checked and the firebug is
installed and enabled.

I created a new profile and installed firebug but I still have the
problem. Is there anything else you can suggest?

Thanks!

Which version of Firefox and Firebug?

If you are using Firefox 3.6 and Firebug 1.6.0, are you using a
localized version (eg not en-US)? After you install in a clean profile
do you have any other extensions installed (some times extensions hook
the operating system to auto install).

If you are using Firefox 4.0, try Firefox 3.6.

I an using firefox 3.6 and firebug 1.6

the only extensions still there are java console, java quick starter,
Microsoft .net framework assistant, and Norton. I have disabled them
all and firebug still does not work.

Try to build a new Firefox profile, using "firefox /p" on the OS command line, and reinstalling Firebug

Is that different than creating a new profile using the profile
manager ("C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -
ProfileManager)? If not, then I have already done that with no luck.

On a side note, I have also noticed that pop-up windows aren't opening
even though I don't have the pop-up blocker enabled. I'm thinking I'm
just going to have to do a clean install of Firefox.

Well, I just uninstalled Firefox (without saving my settings) and did
a clean install, and the issues still persist. I'm beginning to think
it's a Firefox issue and not a Firebug issue.

Reinstalling Firefox almost never fixes anything. Create a new Firefox
profile and start Firefox. Exit firefox. Then find your profile
directory in your disk drive and delete the contents of /extensions.
Restart Firefox and install Firebug. If you still have this issue
then you have some software on your computer that is causing this
problem.
