Sorry - I HAVE searched but can't find a solution for when I'm
inspecting an HTML element (LH pane) and I see the Style in the RH
pane, I click on the style to disable it and it is removed. Firebug in
FFox doesn't do that. How do I stop this happening?

I am not quite sure what's exactly your problem. You are obviously already using Firebug.
The way Firebug works is:
  1. Right-click on an element inside the page and click the option Inspect Element with Firebug.
=> The HTML panel should automatically be selected and in it the element you want to inspect
=> The Style side panel should be selected by default showing the CSS assigned to the currently selected HTML element
  2. Click the red "ban" symbol besides a style to disable it
=> The style is grayed out inside the Style side panel and won't affect the element's display anymore
So please clearly describe what you do, what you see and what you expect to see using our terminology.

Thanks Seb but what you describe does NOT work for me. To expand your explanation reply.....
1. I do that. It works as you say.
2. I do that and the style is not disabled, it is cleared. It disappears. It is removed from the style panel.

In addition , removing the style has no effect on the web page. So, if I say removed a color red, then the page would still reflect red. No difference.

I know how to use Firebug, I've been using it for ages with FFox. I'm using the Chrome version now on Win7. I'm using Firebug Lite 1.4.0.11967 and it is not working for me as it does with FFox. .

 Thank you

Ah, why didn't you tell before, that you're talking about Firebug Lite?
I can reproduce the problem. Please create a new issue including a small test case, but note, that we're currently concentrating our work on Firebug (for Firefox).

Issue 5194 was created to cover this. The work on Firebug Lite is currently on ice due to a lack of resources.
If you want to help us, you can create a patch for this bug. The sources are on github.
