I wanted to send a message regarding an issue I'm having with Firebug
1.8.0 + Firefox 5.0.

Opening the initial Firefox browser window everything works fine, but
if something opens in an additional new window beyond that (or if you
just go to File-> New Window) something happens and that new page
doesn't act right. The main annoying thing is that you can't click
"Back" on that browser window if you navigate to different pages; it's
like it's deactivated or something. The only browser window that
let's you click "Back" is the original one.

I've had this issue on both my home and work computer so I don't think
it's isolated to just me.

This has been reported a few times already e.g. here:
http://groups.google.com/group/firebug/browse_thread/thread/cb654c2a6b9ddde8
but we can't reproduce that.

Do you have any other extensions installed?
Does the problem persist if you crate a new Firefox profile with only
Firebug installed?

I just followed the steps to create a clean Firefox profile with only
Firebug installed. The problem didn't go away. I thought it might
have been because I also have RoboForm on both computers but disabling
that didn't do anything either. One other thing to note, when I try
to get to the Add-On's in Firefox (Ctrl + Shift + A) I can only get
that to come up if one window is open. If there are more than that,
it doesn't do anything. Not sure if there is anything there that is
useful but figured I'd point out the oddities just in case.

One more oddity. I have my Firefox set so the top navigation bar is
more traditional; for example at the top left I have File, Edit, View,
History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help all written out along the top. By
default, Firefox has all of this information in an orange rectangle at
the top left labeled "Firefox" which you click to access those. I've
noticed with this problem I'm having that the initial window has it
the way I want, but all additional one's open with the orange
rectangle top navigation. Maybe there is some kind of conflict going
on there?

Sorry, I'm not trying to be annoying, just trying to help out. I
absolutely love Firebug and appreciate all the work that goes into it.

that is EXACTLY what I'm experiencing and what I see on screen
I agree there is some conflict between FF and Firebug, but it can only be seen when you open a new window, the first FF window behaves normally

I'm also experiencing this problem. Like the previous commentator I
also have Roboform installed and in the second instance of a Firefox
window, the Roboform toolbar is blank. Another 'feature' of this
problem is that f11 doesn't properly make the browser run full screen
and some elements of the browser window are still visible. The
previous version of Firebug worked fine with my existing config so it
looks like a change introduced with 1.8 has caused the problem.

I hope you can fix it as Firebug is a really useful tool.

Thanks
Nick

I am keen to fix the problem, but I can't reproduce that.

I created a new Firefox profile installed Firebug 1.8.0 and
RoboForm Lite Password Manager
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/roboform-online-password-manag/
and I don't see any problem.

So, I need you to investigate it on your machines:

1) Please check out Firefox Error Console
Firefox Menu -> Web Developer -> Error Console
(or in Tools if you have traditional menu bar displayed)
Do you see any errors?

2) You can also install FBTrace extension, which is a Firebug
tracing console used for debugging Firebug.
http://getfirebug.com/releases/fbtrace/1.8/fbTrace-1.8b8.xpi

Open: Firebug Icon menu -> Open Firebug Tracing

In the console window go to the Options tab and check ERRORS
restart Firefox and check the console.
Do you see any errors?

If yes please export into a file (Tools -> Save to File) and
send us.

Please let us know what OS and Firefox version do you use.

I notice the same bug but only with HTML Validator 0.9.6.0 is enabled too. If either Firebug or HTML Validator is disabled, no bug happens for me (i.e. it looks like addons conflict). FF5, Win7. Installing FBTrace not helps much. Issuing "New Window" I see no errors in Firebug Console of FBTrace window. But closing such broken new windows gives a bunch of the same-looking errors:
BTI.Browser.removeListener; ERROR Unknown listener

This exception is the interesting one here. It's caused by Firecookie
(Firebug extension)

Try to install:

Any difference?

I have committed a patch for these problems
See also: http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/detail?id=4699

Will be in Firebug 1.8.1b1 (released later today)

Please try it out and let us know if it helped.

Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately even with Firebug 1.8.1b1 I still have the same problem.
I started with a clean Firefox profile, no add-ons installed (except
Firebug - also Roboform is still running as it is no listed as an add-
on or plugin), With a clear Firefox error console, I reproduced the
problem and the error console now reports the following: -

Here's the code for two templates, a "master" that opens a popup window
and demonstrates that Firebug is disabling features, including
window.close().

Firefox 5/Firebug 1.8

With Firebug disabled, when you click the [Open Popup] button on the
master form, the popup window opens and the [Close Window] button closes
the popup (normal behavior).

With Firebug enabled, the [Close Button] does not work on the popup. In
addition, Firebug will not open in the popup either through the Tools
menu or F12.

CODE FOR MASTER WINDOW:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">

"popupWin",
"width=200px,height=100px,top=25px,left=25px,scrollbars=1,resizable=1,menubar=1")
}
// -->
</script>
</head>

<body>
<input type="button" name="testOpen" id="testOpen" onclick="openWin()"
value="Open Popup" />
</body>

I want to add:
Firefox 5, Firebug 1.8, Ubuntu 11.04

If opening a FF-window and firebug in it,
then opening another window with firebug,
then refreshing that second window with firebug opened will freeze
Firefox.

I can still switch between windows and close Firebug, but until doing
that, system will have 100% load on one cpu and never finish loading
the page.

I have the same issue.

I also have roboform. You need to "remove" roboform (not disable it)
and you will see, it is roboform causing an issue.

but note:

Its a combination of using both roboform and firebug... because, if I
remove firebug... then, it fixes this issue also.

Its as if, roboform and firebug are using the same "window detection"
system (or something like that).

Hope this helps!!!

Note that RoboFrom extension is installed into every profile
automatically so, you need to manually disable it using Addon Manager
in Firefox. You might also need to exit the RoboForm application/
process (in Windows, right click on an icon in the system tray and
pick exit).

Jan,

I am hoping you are still interested in trying to resolve this.

My FF 6.0 install has only Roboform Toolbar for Firefox v7.4.2,
Firebug 1.8.1, FBTrace 1.9b1, and FirePHP 0.6.1 (disabled) installed.
I've confirmed the problem goes away if I disable either Roboform or
Firebug.
As others have mentioned, this problem has existed at least since FF5
with various versions of RF and FB.

Here is a screencast of this problem that I sent to Roboform last
week: http://youtu.be/rsZGuKNwlmY

Today, I created a simple webpage that contains only basic html and a
single link.

When I completely restart firefox with home page set to my simple
page, I see the following in FF Error Console, but nothing more
significant.

Warning: Duplicate resource declaration for 'moduleloader' ignored.
Source File: jar:file:///C:/Users/a0864742/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/
Firefox/Profiles/lq3e0bn5.default/extensions/

Source File: jar:file:///C:/<myprofilepath>/extensions/
fbt...@getfirebug.com.xpi!/components/commandLine.js
Line: 111

When I right click on the link and 'Open Link in New Window', I a new
browser window opens, but there is no content.
The following errors are added in the FF Error console:

Error: this.browsers[i] is undefined
Source File: chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml
Line: 328

Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure
code: 0x80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE)

:: prepareForStartup :: line 6820" data: no]

FBTrace log is 800+ lines long, so I've appended only the tail below.
The FBTrace log included the second Error (see below), but not he
first (this.browser[i] undefined). If you want the full dump, contact

Today, I created a simple webpage that contains only basic html and a
single link to use for the following tests.

Yes!

Note that here is related but report:
http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/detail?id=4720
(it's easier to crate any attachments under that report)

I think that this is related error (but I don't know how this could
happen):
> Error: this.browsers[i] is undefined

Also, I contacted author of FlashGot (Firefox extension) who was also
solving problem with RoboForm. Here is his answer:

"I removed an iframe from the main window XUL overlay and I switched
to creating it on demand: apparently, having it already there at load
time caused Robomform to misbehave."

So, it's somehow related to iframes (or XUL <browser> elements). But I
don't know how to make Firebug iframes loaded on demand. And I don't
have any idea why Firebug should actually do that.

I've been having this same problem since I upgraded to Firefox 5. Upgrading to Firefox 6.01 didn't help;  upgrading to Firebug 1.8.2 didn't help; upgrading to Roboform 7.4.1 didn't help.

But just now, I upgraded to Roboform 7.4.2, and the problem seems to have gone away.

I can confirm that this problem still occurs with Roboform 7.4.2,
Firefox 6.0.1, and Firebug 1.8.2.
