since firefox 5 the big firebug icon is missing from the status bar.

http://blog.getfirebug.com/2011/08/03/firebug-start-button/ is
explaining how to bring the redesigned icon to the status bar. The
problem with this is the new smaller firebug icon does not display the
errors on the page

the same post mentions
"If you still insist to have the good old Firebug icon available – set
the following preference to true: extensions.firebug.showStatusIcon"

my question is how the hell do i do this in firefox. it would have
been great if they could say more in the original post.

1) Type "about:config" into Firefox URL bar (without quotes)
2) Confirm "I'll be careful... blah blah" notice (if not done before)
3) Type: showStatusIcon into the filter field to filter the list of
prefs.
4) Double click on extensions.firebug.showStatusIcon to toggle its
value
5) Restart Firefox

Wow, thank you. I'm going to try this.

Whoever decided to move this to the top probably didn't realize how
inconvenient it is.
So, the mouse movement is:

- Up near the upper right corner
- Then, engage eyes to click on the correct icon (ColorZilla is
showing up to the right of Firebug)
- Then traverse the screen at a diagonal to the lower left.
- Then use normally...

I hope in the next version this icon lands back where it rightly
belongs, in the lower right.

Changes made, off to restart firefox.

Best,

Margie

hmmm... didn't work. I tried both True and False.

Then, noticed there IS no status bar any more.

Does anyone know how, on a mac, to change F12 so that it doesn't show
the sticky notes, calculator, and Cupertino weather? Would rather F12
engage firebug.

Press Function(Fn)+F12 or go to system preferences and customize the keys to the dashboard, it depends on the OS you're on, OSx prior to lion is on Expose settings i think, on Lion is on Mission Control.

The Status Bar has been replaced by the Addons Bar. The future
direction for FF is "Everything is a toolbar". You can get back some
functionality of the Status Bar with with Statue-4-Evar extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/?src=search

Meanwhile, you should be able to right click the main toolbar, choose
Customize, and move the Firebug icon down to the Addons Bar.

(I have that hidden by default, and prefer the FB icon to the right on
the URL bar.)

Honza forgot to mention it, but of course the errors are still shown besides the icon. You just have to enable this option either via Firebug menu > Options > Show Error Count or Firebug Start Button context menu > Show Error Count. The result will look like this:
