Hi,

I recently upgraded to Firefox 3.5.3 and noticed my Firebug add-on had
disappeared. I re-installed Firebug and now it's not showing the icon
to open the app on the bottom right of my browser window as it used
to.

If I check my add-ons under Tools it shows that Firebug is installed,
how do I open it?

Do you have FirePHP installed?

What version of Firebug are you using?

I am experiencing the same with FF 3.5.3 and FB 1.4.3.

I'm on Vista Home Premium. Somewhere around the time I upgrade to FF
3.5.3 and then updated FB, FB disappeared. When re-installing FB it
says successful please restart FF. And when I do FB isn't there. FB
does not show up as an installed extension either.

Thanks

I think your choices are to install Firebug in a new Firefox profile
or contact FIrefox support.

I wonder if you are having the same problem as I'm getting with the
Web Developer extension. When I install that it doesn't show up
(except in the Add-ons list). Close FF, go to the Profile in Windows
Explorer, and delete (preferably rename) the three files called
'extensions.cache', extensions.ini' and 'extensions.rtf'. They will
be regenerated when you start Firefox again.

Your profiles are (probably) at 'c:\Documents and Settings\your
username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

The problem for me seems to be linked to FF 3.5.2+ and the latest
version of the Google toolbar. I also have to say that having Firebug
installed MAY be making a difference too (I'm still investigating).
The WD toolbar disapears every time I install/update/disable/enable/
uninstall ANY extension, and I have to go through the file deletion
procedure as above. Any test of what works or doesn't isn't valid
until I've done this. Note also that any extensions you've merely
disabled will be re-enabled, so if they are suspect you'll need to
uninstall them.

I hope that may be helpful,

Tim,

Your note about the extension files has helped shed some light. But
still no FB.

Here is what I did.

Closed FF.
Deleted extensions.* from my profile directory.
Opened FF
Went to getfirebug.com and clicked install
Went through install process.
Clicked restart FF after install
FF restarted
No FB.

Here is the extension log file.

I have three other extensions installed. Google TB, Selenium, .Net
Framework Assistant. I had Alexa Sparky installed. After I deleted
extensions.* the first time it said it was not compatible with FF
3.5.3 (although it was working previously).

And for Vista users the profile directory is here:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

Noah,

Iff your FB problem is similar to mine with Web Developer, the order
of operations needs to be different:

Open FF
Install Firebug in the usual way
Restart FF (you may be able to omit this step, but you can check for
FB in the 'Tools > Add-ons' list)
Close FF (make sure it really is closed in 'Task Manager > Processes')
Go to Profile, delete 'extensions.*' files
Restart FF

I'm running XP, your Vista terminology may be different.

I'm having trouble with Firebug not installing properly too, and
unfortunately the above procedure doesn't seem to solve it.
When I've installed FB, I can see it listed in the 'Tools' menu, with
an arrow on the right that doesn't produce a further menu. Is it the
same for you ?

My troubles started with FF 3.5.2 and the new Google Toolbar
(supposedly compatible). In addition to the vanishing WD, legitimate
pop-ups (e.g. enlarged images) won't work when certain extensions are
present (X-marks particularly). Pop-ups don't work when I've
installed FB either, but this may be due to the faulty install rather
than FB itself. Also, when the install is faulty FF doesn't always
close properly, and I have to do it in 'Task Manager > Processes'.

I fear that won't help you much, but at least you'll know you're not
alone.

Tim

just fyi,

I'm experiencing the same issues. FF3.5.3 upgrade and FB gone. WD
still there and works as usual. I remember an automatic FB upgrade
yesterday?, FB has not been seen since.

The FEBE[1] extension has an option to check/correct the extension
directory. Don't know how well it works, haven't had that problem ...
so far ;-}

I've no experience of FEBE, but I notice it's had lots of five star
reviews, and then just recently two with complaints about corrupted
files. It's another Extension, so could it be having trouble with FF
3.5.3 like the rest of us ?

WD is more important to me than FB, so I'm going to leave the latter
off until there's a fix.

You will need to install it by hand. Follow the instructions in the
link below. It's #4. It worked for me.

I should also add that this is occuring with other extensions too, not
just Firebug. It appears to be an issue with Firefox v. 3.5.3.

Nora, appreciate the update and counsel.

Here's my issue: I'm not an inexperienced computer user and I can't
find an extensions folder - nor can I find those extensions.* files
people have said to delete. Something is very strange. Do you happen
to have a path to this folder? I noticed today that Delicious isn't
working either (same issues).

Many thanks!

I really don't think you should be deleting files in the profile. At
most you should create a new profile, but others report that in this
case it does not help.

I think the best course of action is to look in to Firefox Support.

Let us know.

I've been suffering this problem, and had problems with other
extensions too (Xmarks and Web Developer).

This morning my computer did a lengthy Windows Update. Shortly after
that Firefox popped up a message to say that two Windows Add-ons were
considered likely to interfere with other add-ons, did I want them
disabled. You bet I did ! So I accepted. Firefox restarted, and all
my extensions have been OK since. (Fingers crossed).

The two miscreants are Plug-ins: Windows Presentation Foundation
(which you can disable) and another called something like
'Windows .NET helper', which I can't actually find, so perhaps FF
uninstalled it.

Firebug is now visible, and can be launched and run (though I've not
tested exhaustively).

I suggest anyone with a similar problem should disable the 'Windows
Presentation Foundation' plug-in, and see what happens from there.

Good Luck,
Tim Dawson

@Caryn

I have to agree with John.

If the link I gave and the containing tips do not help you or you are
not sure how to use them, Firefox support is the place to go.

Firefox posted something, but it said the missing files had to be
there and even though I followed what they said, and showed hidden
files (which was my default), the files still aren't there. A
complete waste of time.

@Tim - I ran the update (scheduled to run later today, but did it
now). Nothing changed. Glad it worked for you.

An IT guy I've know for years suggested going back to an earlier
version of FF. I'm going to give it a couple of more days, see if
anyone here has additional suggestions, and then maybe have to try
that.

Have I mentioned yet that I really, really dislike Vista 64-bit OS?
It's been nothing but a problem from the beginning!

Again, thanks to you all. Much appreciated to know that I'm not
alone!

Best,

Caryn

The below article was just mentioned on another thread I was following
concerning this problem.

Thanks Microsoft!

@CarynG

My firefox just disabled Microsft .NET extesnion for me and disabled a
plugin called "Windows presentation Foundation".

I just got a new HDD and will now attempt to install Firebug. I'll let
you know if it works.

Ok. I can confirm that Firebug 1.4.3 installed correctly on Firefox
3.5.3 with the offending extension and plugin disabled.

no, I'm on 32bit Vista.

I did have a flawed HDD too though. I hope it will all work out for
you. You may want to restart and do a complete HDD defrag and disk
check.

I get the same message about "unverified source" from any extension.
Maybe Firefox changed something.

I made another attempt to install FireBug today and was successful.
There was another post with the same "NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED"
message and here was the solution.

What worked for me:
1. Run Firefox elevated (as an administrator). Go back to Get Add-ons
and install Firebug.
2. DO NOT click Restart. Instead, exit Firefox normally.
3. Run Firefox elevated again. This is when the installation really
happens. Since Firefox is running as an administrator, it now has
permission to update the files it needs to.
4. Confirm Firebug is installed, then exit Firefox and run it normally
(not elevated).

Thanks
