Hi All

We have users that would like to connect to their Firebird DB to view
data in Power BI.  The Power BI users are located in a different city to
the actual business.  I am not sure if they are using Power BI desktop
or Azure (or if that matters).

One idea we had was to setup a VPN and have them access the data via a
simple ODBC connection.  This seems the least work to get access. I
believe this would work for BI Desktop, not sure about Azure / cloud
based.  Another option we are considering is replicating a snapshot of
data to a cloud server and allowing access via OData. This seems better
but also a lot more work.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated :)

Thanks
Rob

For snapshots - yes, it may be a lot of work. But for continuous replication you can
use already existing tools.
For example, you can use magpie (provider for Firebird<->ODBC interaction) and push
data into cloud from triggers.
Or you can use IBPhoenix Replicator to do the same.

Hello Robert,

From our experience, it will be hardly possible to feed powerbi directly from Firebird, the solution will require intermediate storage, e.g., export from Firebird to AzureSQL or BigQuery and connect PowerBI or Google Data Studio there.

Desktop version of Power BI has a problem with big number of foreign keys but otherwise
it works with Firebird ODBC driver (at least one in my git repo) quite well.

Hi Dimitry

What DB would you replicate to in the cloud.  I was thinking MYSQL and
using an OData shell (https://www.progress.com/odata/mysql)  to provide
access to Power BI.  However Alexey suggested AzureSQL and that sounds
like a good option as it would come with OData access built in.  I can't
find a link to Magpie but IBPhoenix Replicator says it can replicate to
ODBC so I assume I could replicate to AzureSQL?

Really appreciate your help :)

Thanks
Rob

Taking into account that Microsoft Power BI originally was supposed to work with
Microsoft SQL Server only, I would replicate to Azure SQL.

Most likely yes.

Sweet.  Do you have a link to magpie?  When I search I get bird stories :)

It is not released yet but you can ask Paul Beach about taking part in beta tests. And
it is for Firebird 4 only.
