How do you control costs in Firebase now that Flame is disappearing?

Hi

I would like confirmation from someone in Firebase how you manage costs in Firebase going forward now that Flame is being retired? I am scared of a huge bill. And budget alerts are simply not going to cut it.

Thanks

Hey all,

Sorry for the slow reply here.  Now that the Flame plan is going away, there is currently no way to place a cap on your costs with Firebase (unless you're on the free plan, of course).  You can set a budget alert through Google Cloud which will let you know when your costs increase, but it won't actually shut anything down.

Hi Sam

Thanks for getting back to me. That's pretty bad.

We are a start up and need an effective control on costs and budget alerts aren't good enough.

If you don't have a proper in built control I guess you will see a lot of people stop using firebase?

To my mind this is really bad. Nobody wants a huge bill.

If it seems firebase is taking away cost control. Then what follows is an increase in costs for Blaze too. I have seen this story before with Google maps API!

Thanks

Hi Talib,

I hear you and I agree with your sentiment.  Developers want to have control of their spending.  However the Flame plan was not the right answer because it only allowed you to control costs at exactly one price ($25).  If you're a developer spending $50 and wanting to set a budget at $100, the Flame was not helpful for you.

We made this change because the Flame plan was implemented in a strange and unsustainable way that was very hard for us to maintain.  I hope you can trust me when I say that's all there is to it.  We are trying to get to a better solution for this problem in the future.

Hi Sam

Thanks for your message and I appreciate the sentiment.

What do you guys have in mind in the future for controlling costs? And when do you think there will be a formal announcement around it?

Cheers

Hey Talib,

As you probably know, your Firebase bill is really a Google Cloud bill.  We hope to help Google Cloud develop a solution and then use theirs, rather than have something Firebase-specific like Flame.  To set expectations: this is not a promise of something coming soon, but something we want working on long-term.
