DART VM support in Cloud Functions

When is Google making the obvious step to add Dart as VM option?

Hi Wendel,

I can't speak for the Cloud Functions team's plans officially but I would not expect to see a new Dart runtime on GCF soon. Instead I would look into Cloud Run, where you can run any language runtime you can describe in a Dockerfile. There are even ways (see functions framework) to get a GCF experience on top of Cloud Run.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for getting back to me. Cloud Functions are a single purpose and event driven solution which works really well with the firestore triggers. This cannot be done with Cloud Run. If Firebase has a significant amount of Flutter users then this would be a logical step. I hope your team can push some buttons in Google.

Hi Wendel,

I totally agree! We are definitely working to add more trigger types, including Cloud Firestore triggers, to Cloud Run. I can't offer a timeline there, but I would place my bets on that happening before a Dart runtime is added to GCF.

We have a lot of Flutter lovers on the Firebase team, we definitely realize how great the developer experience could be if you could write your backend in Dart as well.
