Barcode API for Drivers License scanning

I'm using the Firebase on device barcode scanner on Android to scan US drivers license and the recognition performance seems to be pretty bad. Has anyone got any tips to improve the scanning performance? Or could anyone share experiences that can convince me not to look for alternatives?

I'm not really sure what to expect in terms of accuracy and coverage.

I have no experience of this, however, I have done some OCR recognition on similar documents. One thing worth looking at is the contrast of the image. If you can adjust it, you may find certain values scan better.
