Hi there,

What support is there for Kindle Fire devices?

So far we have not been able to pull through any bespoke tracking ID's, only default tracking results are displayed in our console.  We think this is down to Kindle devices not having Google-Play-Services, but are at a loss as to how to proceed with Firebase to get the data we need here.

Any advice or would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,

Kindle is not supported right now because of the lack of Play services. Nothing on the roadmap I can talk about.

Hello,
Your comment is now almost 2 years old, is there any update on this issue. This restriction does somewhat limit the general usefulness of Firebase given that Kindle tablets are a significant audience for may app developers.

Thank you and stay safe.

Hi Roy,

While we don't do any official testing on Kindle Fire devices, many of our Android SDKs now work on devices without Play services.  Specifically all of our open source SDKs should work fine:
https://github.com/firebase/firebase-android-sdk

Samuel,
Thank you for the prompt reply. The feature I was looking to implement that instigated my reaching out to you, was User Authentication. This does not appear to be in the open source list as yet and I can confirm that it does not work on Fire devices. If you were I, would you wait a while in the expectation that play services dependency would be removed or would you look to an alternative provider?

One other point for consideration. We use analytics linked to BigQuery. In analytics there is an automatic recording of in-app purchases for Apple and Google Play, but not for other app stores. It would be nice if the in-app billing transaction could be opened up and documented so that I could fill this gap. Currently we are forced to ignore the in-app transaction and duplicate the information as eCommerce.

Regards and stay safe.

Roy

Hi Roy,

For simple authentication use cases it's possible to use the REST API on devices without Play services by following this example:
https://github.com/FirebaseExtended/auth-without-play-services

We eventually want to open-source the Firebase Auth SDK and remove the Play services dependency but I can't offer a timeline on when that will happen.  And thank you for your feedback about Analytics, the best place to file a feature request like that is here:
https://firebase.google.com/support/troubleshooter/report

That will make sure it gets routed directly to the Analytics team.
