That does seem strange, putFile should accept either a content URI or a file URI.

Could you try resolving the content URI to an input stream (https://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/ContentResolver.html#openInputStream%28android.net.Uri%29) and then using putStream (https://developers.google.com/android/reference/com/google/firebase/storage/StorageReference#putStream(java.io.InputStream) to upload the file?
