If I use a custom domain for my Firebase website, will that get rid of the old subdomain?
I'm asking because I don't want my content to be accessible on both a Firebase subdomain and my custom domain since
it can cause duplicate content issues in Google, and it's generally really bad for SEO.

My current host (netlify) uploads my website both on my subdomain (mywebsite.netlify.com) and custom domain
and I don't want that. Therefore I'm looking to use Firebase as my host instead.

No, we will serve content on both mywebsite.firebaseapp.com and your custom domain. We recommend if you're concerned about this that you put <link rel="canonical"> tags in your site's pages to ensure that crawlers understand that the firebaseapp.com subdomain is non-canonical. That being said, so long as you aren't publicly sharing links to your subdomain site, it generally isn't a problem.

Oh, no. :(
I guess I can't use firebase then. I really don't want duplicate content since I have been burned by Google's algorithms before.
No offense but there's no way I would upload anything to a host that puts my content on two different domains nowadays.
