Hi all,

I was wondering if there are any services provided by Firebase Android SDK that work even without Google Mobile Services installed on the device.

In particular, I'm interested in Remote Config, Analytics and Crashlytics. (I already know for sure that Cloud Messaging and Dynamic Links absolutely require GMS)

Do you if any of these services work on devices without GMS?

Thanks

Hi Pasquale,

Dynamic Links, Cloud Messaging, and Authentication are the ones that I know depend on GMS / Google Play services. Let me double-check with some subject experts and get back to you with confirmation.

The following products won't work without GMS, a.k.a. Google Play Services dependency: Authentication, Cloud Messaging, Dynamic Links, Firebase ML, and Performance Monitoring.

The following products/integrations will still work at least partially:
  • Google Analytics works but some demographic insights will be lost
  • A/B Testing works, but it's not possible to test notifications since Cloud Messaging isn't supported
  • App Distribution will likely depend on GMS in a future release

Thank you very much.

What about remote config and crashlytics? Will they work at least partially without GMS?

Thanks

Hi Pasquale,

If you use the latest versions of the SDK both of those products work without Play services.

Hi Pasquale,

Your email inspired us to finally get this guidance published clearly in the docs:
https://firebase.google.com/docs/android/android-play-services

We'll keep that page up to date, hope it's helpful!
