Hi Firebasers,

I’m Michael, a new engineer on the Firebase team. Today we’re introducing two new features: Google Login and Firebase CLI 2.0.  Also, Divshot has joined Firebase!

Google Login and Firebase CLI 2.0

Many of you have asked for more security on your Firebase account. Starting today, Google Login is the default authentication for firebase.com. By enabling Google Login, you’ll get two-factor authentication for your Firebase account. You’ll also have access to Google account recovery if you get locked out of your account.

In addition to Google Login, today we’ve released version 2.0 of our Firebase CLI. This release adds several new features, including a local server, reading and writing data from the CLI, and more. I want to personally thank everyone who provided feedback on previous versions of the CLI, your input has helped us continue to improve the product.

You can check out our blog for more details on both features.

Divshot joins Firebase

Finally, I’m thrilled to announce that front-end web hosting service Divshot has joined Firebase! Both Divshot and Firebase are passionate about creating extraordinary developer experiences, and now we’re moving forward together toward that common goal. As a cofounder of Divshot, I’m excited to see Divshot live on and grow as part of Firebase. More details on this announcement can be found on our blog.

Hello Michael!

Sounds interesting. I just tried migrating my account to my google account and had a slight problem: After clicking "Switch to Google Login" in the dashboard and choosing an account, the process got stuck with a "Waiting for facebook.com" spinning in the browser status bar. Disabling my adblocker seemed to solve the problem, just wanted to let you know (Firefox, adblock Edge).

On a related note: is there any limitation/drawback to not migrating to a google account? I acctually prefer less dependancy among the accounts, especially when looking at it from a company-point-of-view. But of course I guess it makes sense since Google bought Firebase.

Regards, and thanks for a great product and fantastic community interaction!

/Erik

Hi Erik,

After clicking "Switch to Google Login" in the dashboard and choosing an account, the process got stuck with a "Waiting for facebook.com" spinning in the browser status bar.

That is extremely odd. Not sure were Facebook comes into the picture here at all... But I'm glad temporarily disabling AdBlock fixed it for you. We will keep an eye out others who run into similar issues. Unfortunately, AdBlock sometimes blocks this which are not actually adds. Thanks for letting us know!

Is there any limitation/drawback to not migrating to a google account?

It is very likely that new Firebase features and products in the future will require a Google account tied to them. We've been hard at work teaming up with many teams at Google and (for technical reasons) our email / password users won't be able to access all the new and exciting stuff we are working on. Hopefully by the time these things come out, you will more than gladly switch to a Google account so you can get all the new goodies.

Cheers,
Jacob

Hi Michael,

I switched to google login, but now the Vulcan plugin, doesn't work anymore. Is it an firebase app to provide support and correct the but or is it a third part?
Is there another app to manage firebase data?

Kind Regards

We are working on getting Vulcan updated for the new login flow. A new, working version should be out within a day or two.

Cheers,
Jacob

Divshot had the concept of different environments. I could deploy to say staging or production. Is this something that Firebase supports? I've read the docs and the answer /seems/ to be no...

Cheers,
Adam.

Hi Adam!

While Firebase Hosting supports full version rollbacks, just like Divshot, it doesn't have first-class environment support. That being said, if you create multiple Firebase projects (e.g. myapp-staging and myapp-production), you can easily deploy to one or the other by using:

firebase deploy -f <project_name>

We know how useful first-class environments were for Divshot users, and we're investigating ways we can bring some of the same benefits to the larger Firebase product ecosystem.

🔥, Katoi
