I apologize if this is a very obvious question but can't find any info on the web.

I am the GA admin for my company.
We have a mobile app that doesn't have the same flow/pages/screens as the web.

The Mobile team use Firebase and they want to connect it to our existing GA account.

1 - What are the benefits of doing this?
2 - Wouldn't this muddy up data for the main site?
3 - Why use an existing account? Is there any historical data that would be helpful?
4 - Should we just create a new account in GA for this?

If there are any guides to provide more info or similar threads, please feel free to share!

Thank you

A number of Firebase products (e.g. Cloud Messaging, A/B Testing, Remote Config, et al)  can take advantage of Analytics data (e.g. audiences, demographics, user properties) to improve targeting of users for marketing, engagement, and testing. Also, and perhaps obviously, this allows you to Collecting Analytics on your mobile users, which is useful for the same reasons you track this for web users.

You can segment by platform (web/android/ios). So it shouldn't be a substantial issue.

Both approaches work. You can store data in separate accounts, which makes aggregating data harder (but not impossible) or the same project which makes reporting on platforms more complicated (but not much). If you turn on bigquery exports, you can set up pretty much any report schema you can think of, but it's non-zero effort.
