We use Firebase for Analytics and Messaging - that's all.

Marketing wants to try and get some more Analytics data and the Firebase console tells us we have to upgrade to the Blaze plan to get full BigQuery. This kind of makes sense, but when I look at the pricing structure, we actually don't have to pay for anything in the Blaze plan, because we don't currently use any of the other services.

Does this make any sense? As in, should I just sign up and put our payment details in, and be charged $0, and we will have access to BigQuery?

Cheers,
Ricky.

Hey Ricky,

You need to upgrade and provide payment information because BigQuery is not free (as you noticed).  However your Analytics and FCM usage will remain totally free so you'll only be paying for the BigQuery usage.  The baseline cost will be the storage for your event data and then there are additional charges for data processed while querying.

Thanks for confirming that Sam. How do we anticipate what our BigQuery usage costs will be? I can't locate any pricing details similar to your other Firebase products.

Hi Ricky,

While I realize this isn't a very satisfying answer, the answer is there is no good way to estimate your BQ usage before your first export.  It really depends on the type of events / user properties you're collecting and how often they are logged.  Once you enable BQ export you'll be able to see the daily storage usage of your event data.  If you look at BigQuery pricing you'll see that storage is very inexpensive, $0.020 per GB.  So unless your app is extremely popular, experimenting with BQ export should cost very little and you can disable it at any time.
