Should I use Firebase Auth if I am not using the Firebase Database?

I've been looking through the Firebase tools, trying to determine which ones are a right fit for this project. I'm pretty sure Firebase Database and Firebase Hosting are a no-go. As for Firebase Auth, my question is this: custom server-side authentication is already in place. Would there be any advantage to using Firebase auth? My initial impression is that Firebase auth is really just useful for projects that don't already have authentication set up on their own servers, or for projects using Firebase Database/Firebase hosting. Is that right? If that is not correct, what is the benefit of using Firebase Auth?

With Firebase v3 multiple products have been pulled in under the firegase umbrella.  You might look at an consider the crash reporting (and, perhaps, some of the other features).  However, not knowing what your application does and how you want to enhance it, it is hard to make a reasoned recommendation.

Perhaps I'm not clear enough. I'm not asking about all of Firebase as a whole; rather, I'm asking specifically about the Firebase Authentication product, https://firebase.google.com/docs/auth/ . My initial impression is that it is only useful for users to sign into Firebase Database or Firebase Hosting--that it does not have a lot of value as a standalone way to simplify user authentication IF there already is server-side authentication set up for the app. Or is it useful?

Hi Chad,

Firebase Authentication is still quite useful as as a simple and secure way to do user authentication in your app, even if you're not pairing it with Database or Storage.  Of course if you already have an authentication solution that works for you and you don't plan to use Database or Storage in the future then you are right that it may not be worth the effort to refactor your app to use Firebase Authentication.
