Hi everyone!

Recently, Apple announced an APNS server certificate update.

Am I right that we don't have to update our APNS certificates issued by Apple and uploaded to a Firebase project for the FCM; Firebase team will update the server certificate for that matter?

Regards,
Pavel

Hi,

You are correct. Firebase servers will handle these updates.

Is this also correct we don't have to do anything on apple developer account or firebase settings as well when we are using `APNs Authentication Key` using p8 file?

Hi everyone,
If we are using any third party server for our push notification we need not to handle these updates in those scenarios. Here is the development on Apple Forum regarding this. This will clear all your doubts. Here is the statement from Apple Engineer:

This certificate update is only needed for developers who are running their own push servers to directly communicate with APNs.

3rd party push providers will need to handle this certificate update on their end.

If you are not certain that your provider may not be ready for this update, you would want to double check with them.

We are using firebase as push notification provider for our company's iOS mobile app and recently we got to know that Apple is updating its Apple push notification service server certificate as mentioned in link --> https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=09za8wzy

In firebase FCM dashboard, we have already using uploaded APNS certificate which can be seen in attached screenshot. As per apple, this certificate update needs to be handled by push notification provider and our company's backend communicate with FCM to deliver the push notification to iOS mobile app users. Apple response for the same can be found in link --> https://forums.developer.apple.com/forums/thread/770316

So we we just want to get confirmation from firebase team member itself that will this certificate update will be handled by firebase as recommended by Apple or is there any change required at our side also?

Thanks
Amanpreet Singh

Hi Joe,

Thank you for the update!

Could you please confirm if the necessary changes have already been applied to all current versions of Firebase? Or is there a new version being prepared to address this?

Looking forward to your clarification.

Best regards,
Trin Nguyen X

As this is a server-side change, no version updates  are necessary.

Hi,

I am using an APNs authentication key in FCM. I came to know that if we are using the APNs authentication key instead of the APNs certificate, the developer needs to make an update. Is that correct, or is it just false information? Has Firebase handled both scenarios?

Is there any official document/link from Firebase confirming this?

Thanks in advance!

"Has Firebase handled both scenarios?"

Yes, I have just confirmed with the team that this (and other similar questions that we rejected from posting) are all already handled on the server side.

As a final note, I have spoken about this on Stack Overflow for posterity.

Bottom Line: If you use FCM for APNS you are already good for this particular change.
