DAU vs Unique session start

Hello,

The unique users that hit the Session start events in firebase on a specific day are greater than the DAU that are shown in the dashboard.

Shouldn't this count be the same?

Hello Rishika, 

DAU is based on user_engagement, not session_start. So I would expect session_start to be higher than engaged users. There is a great Stack Overflow post including queries you can use to understand the metrics (and reproduce them in BigQuery) here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/54090433/394010 (you should upvote it if you agree it's useful).

Also keep in mind that the dashboard shows reports based on slices for the configured timezone, where BigQuery stores them in UTC. So the day definitions are likely slightly skewed as well.

Hi Rishika,

The count of DAU and session_start event users for a specific day will not be the same as the DAU from the dashboard will take into account daily active users from the last 7 days by calculating the average number of users. While for the session_start event, it will give the cumulative number of users for a specific date range selected. 

However, if we look at the single date user data for session_start event and DAU, the user count will match. Below screenshots of the data points from Firebase Demo Project for reference:
