Why we didn't chose Firebase.

Hey...

Just wanted to give some feedback, as to we didn't chose Firebase as mBaas for our games.

We make casual games for IOS, Android and Web. Card games, match-three games, clicker games etc.

- Firebase Unity SDK needs more targets (Desktop, WebGL, etc. etc.)

- No support for EU datacenters (100ms latency to us-central)

- Cloud function triggered by time (cronjobs)

- Cloud function cold starts makes it hard persuade leaders.

  - They say things like: "If Firebase can't make one call within ms, how can they handle our load".

We decided to go with GameSparks, which have all these features.

GameSparks Cloud Code is however a bit weird, and doesn't allow you to use npmjs.org packages from within your functions, which is a thing i really like about Firebase.

This is by no means an attempt to discredit Firebase. 

I really like Firebase, i'm using it for a lot of other personal projects.

One question: Re the EU datacenters, was that in terms of the Realtime Database or Cloud Functions executions? 

Re cron cloud functions, that is a great feature request which we've heard a few times, so its on our radar. In case you hadn't seen it, there is a not-terrible workaround that Abe wrote up on the blog which uses the Cron feature of AppEngine to trigger HTTPS functions: https://firebase.googleblog.com/2017/03/how-to-schedule-cron-jobs-with-cloud.html

Yes, i've read the cronjobs article, and i agree this is a totally legit way of doing so, that wasn't the deal breaker for us, at all.

The missing Unity targets, where our biggest issue.

I actually don't know if it was the location of the functions or the database, that caused the latency.

I basically modified a field in the db from my client, a cloud function responded to it, by adding modifying another field, that the client subscribed to.

Cloud functions cannot be changed from us-central in Google Cloud Console.
