Hello,

are there any plans to decouple Firebase from the Google Play Services? My issue is that Amazon Fire devices won't be able to use Firebase Auth unless the owner installs Google Play Services on the device, which isn't a straight forward thing to do.

I know that it has just been integrated into the Google Play Services, but will there be a solution to this problem?

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

No plans we can share here, although dependency on Google Play is a topic we often discuss. Thanks for adding your vote to the list.

Hi Kato,

so i guess this dependency is one of a list of reasons why Firebase Auth isn't currently supported in the Unity Editor on Windows?

Cheers,
Nicklas

Adding my vote for google play services to be decoupled also (for auth reasons).

To be clear -- are you asking to be able to run on Android devices without play services.  Or are you asking to run on platforms other than Android altogether (like the desktop or console).

I'm voting for auth functionality on android devices that do not have Google play services. Specifically for the Amazon Fire and the Clover POS.

Decoupling firebase and play services would be very helpful for a few reasons:

1.  More clarity as to whether firebase works on devices without play services (for me, specifically logging & crash reporting).  We still get lots of installs on non-play services devices.
2.  I typically try to delay updating to the latest version of play services (because not all devices get updated ... or updates are delayed which brings about an unfortunate notification stating that the app won't work until they upgrade play services ... among other reasons).
3.  In order to keep up-to-date with firebase releases, I have to remain in sync with play services.

Agree! it's a pity that Firebase cannot be used without Google Play Service. The only reason I am not using it is because almost none of the Android phones in China has Google Play Service, which is about 60% of my user base.

I'm slowly regretting using Firebase for 4 of my apps because of this reason. Firebase was good before they were bought over by Google. Now they might do the with Fabric.io but that's another discussion.

Agree, decoupled with Google related services.
Or configurable use firebase without the Google service.
Otherwise, firebase is not usable in China or without Google play service.

Thanks.
