Hello, I have noticed that whenever I import a Google Cloud project into Firebase (generally using Blaze billing) there is a new "topic" created in GCP PubSub called "repository-changes.default"

Can anyone comment on what this topic is?  By default, this topic has no subscribers.  I setup a test subscriber to this topic and tried to change data in the Firebase Database, but no messages were sent to the topic.  Likewise for changes made to a file in Firebase Storage.

While at Google IO, I was told that certain parts of the new Firebase are build on top of Cloud PubSub, so I was hoping that we would be able to subscribe to a GCP PubSub topic in order to get messages related to Database changes.  Anybody have any pointers or thoughts here?

Thanks!
david

Hi David,

You can't subscribe to Database events using PubSub. It does sound like an interesting feature request!

Unclear what the new topic is for. Most likely an artifact of importing. I'll see if I can find some clarification.

That topic will emit events when you interact with your project's cloud source repository, such as pushing code to it.

Ah, that makes sense.  I was hoping that topic was Firebase related.  :(

@Kato, it would be awesome to be able to subscribe to a PubSub topics for Firebase events.  As it stands now, it's very difficult to get a lossless subscription to Firebase events using a subscriber inside of GCP (if the GCP server goes down, it seems like some events would be missed).

I was sort of under the impression that this was in the feature pipeline.  Let me know if you find anything concrete.  Otherwise, where do I submit a feature request?

Thanks,
david

David,

The current way to get a lossless subscription to events is to use a queue strategy.  Great feedback here. Passing it on.
