I attended an 8 hour seminar on Google Cloud todsy - they discusse a half dozen DB solutions... but NOT ONE word about Firebase/Firestore.

During Q and A - I asked why? - 6-8 engineers on the stage and they stumbled around suggesting internal politics prohibiited discussion, no time - and even  a response that Firebase was not part of cloud... and if I needed info. go to Google I/O

I was totlly shocked

At the start they did a show of hands from the auience of about 450... maybe 5% Hw geeks, a handful of decision makers and the balnace were developers... -

25% left at lunch, another 25% left after afternoon break and the balance remained to the end waiting  for prizes and TSirts.

Most uninspiring event I have ever been to....

So - is there a disconnect between classic Cloud Services and the new, what seemed to be  - red heaed stepchild called Firebase?

Hi Hugh,

First of all, sorry you didn't have a good experience at the event!  Would you mind emailing me personally with the name of the event and specific feedback?  Second, I can try to address your concern about separation between Firebase and Google Cloud.

Firebase is definitely part of Cloud, although we have not always done a good job of making that clear.  Some Firebase products, like the Realtime Database, are fairly distinct from any Cloud offering.  Others, like Cloud Storage and Cloud Functions, share all of their infrastructure with a Cloud product but have an additional Firebase layer.  And some of our newest products, like Cloud Firestore, are total joint efforts between Firebase and Cloud and are built to serve both developer communities equally.

That said, Google is a big company and nobody can be an expert on all of our products.  While I consider myself part of Cloud I would be pretty stumped if you asked me to explain anything about Cloud Bigtable or Cloud Memorystore.  I imagine what happened is that the 6-8 engineers you met were not Firebase experts and didn't do the best job explaining how we're organized.

Hello Hugh!

I think you're on to something here. Feeling the need to attend every seminar I can find and make sure all the Q&A sessions start with "Why didn't you use Firebase for that?" Time to 🔥🔥🔥 all the things!

More seriously, thanks for reaching out! We love getting feedback. +1 to everything Sam said. Clearly we haven't left enough Firebase shaped pineapples on desks yet and have some more work to do to get everyone on the same page. This is super useful to hear.

☼, Kato

Hi Hugh,

Just to follow up here, would you mind sharing the name/location of the seminar you went to?  We still want to follow up with the organizers.  Thanks!

Hi Sam - the Denver event was

One person on the stage said there was "internal politics" re. inclusion of Firebase.
Another person claimed that Firebase was not part of cloud ... And I pointed out that it sure felt like it was part Cloud and I had invested a great deal of time in Firebase solutions... indeed, we argued abou it as I found the responses "bizzare". AND told them so.

I was shocked when another person said if I wanted Firebase info.... I should go to Google I/O.

There was an obvious rift... and there shoud not be.

Hi Hugh!

I can see how both the absence of Firebase content along with some of the responses to your question was frustrating. Thanks for your willingness to reach out and to challenge us to do better! I'd like to connect via phone tomorrow (or, if that is inconvenient, another day) if you are open to doing so.

Hi Brandon. Thanks for getting back. I'm certainly available to discuss this further.
