Partnerships are key to strengthening climate services
Alice Atunes, Jan 20
Climate services help bridge the gap between climate science and decision makers to ensure that climate information gets to those who need it (such as farmers, governments, and business), and that those who need it, know what to do with it. But how can we best make use of climate information and services for better, climate-aware decision-making? That was the question that brought climate scientists and modelers, climate services providers and users, and decision- makers from around the world to the fourth annual International Conference on Climate Services (ICCS4) from December 10-12, 2014 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

IFC, CTF and SunEdison partner on largest solar power effort in Central America
IFC Blended Climate Finance, Jan 13
After a series of false starts that kept utility-scale solar out of the country, Honduras’ solar sector ended 2014 on a very good note.  On December 15, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) announced an investment with SunEdison, a leading solar developer, to develop 81.7 MW of utility-scale solar PV power in Honduras. The project is expected to be the largest solar power development in Central America to date and, part of the largest grid-connected solar project in Honduras. It is also the first project committed under the Clean Technology Fund’s (CTF) Dedicated Private Sector Programs (DPSP) and has the potential to spark major growth in the region’s solar market.

Weathering storms and saving lives through climate services
Martin Craig Hall, Jan 26
Changes in climate and weather affect us all but they are hitting developing countries first and worst.  Droughts can destroy a harvest, floods can wreck homes and schools, and extreme weather can have a devastating impact on countries’ economies.  Getting the right information to the right people at the right time can save lives and livelihoods. That is the job of climate services, and all 18 countries of the PPCR have set out to enhance their national systems. If knowledge is power than few tools are as powerful as climate services.
