The term "indigenous rights" has unfortunately taken on a racialist
tag in Fiji due to history and the negative connotation it has earned
via the expression and politics of some sections of the indigenous
community. Indigenous rights easily evokes reactions from non-
indigenous peoples, academics, politicians, the media etc that see it
as pursuing a 'nationalist' and radical agenda. This is far from the
truth. FIORA is a non-political grassroots organisation that respects
the right of other peoples, the rule of law and the need for cultural
co-existence.
