Fireground Leadership Seminar

Synopsis:  This full-day seminar will feature two topics fireground leadership topics:


Ventilation for Today’s Fire Buildings

 

Does your department have a ventilation-specific standard operating procedure to address controlling fire behavior? This session will include a discussion of the effects of ventilation practices and the problems presented by contemporary building construction. Strategies to coordinate ventilation will be presented that will assist in gaining control of building construction-related fire behavior to enable entry for search and fire attack.

 

Leadership to Avoid Fire Service Injuries and Deaths

 

This session is intended for all members of the fire service, as real leadership can be executed from any rank. The presentation will focus on learning from others’ past failures and decision making practices to avoid repeating critical fireground mistakes that have resulted in injuries and deaths.

Lead Instructor:  Michael M. Dugan was a 27 year veteran of the FDNY, retiring as Captain of Ladder Co. 123 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in 2011. Capt. Dugan previously served in Ladder Co. 42 in the South Bronx and Ladder Co. 43 in Brooklyn, where he was awarded the 1992 James Gordon Bennett and 1993 Dr. Harry Archer medals for bravery. Capt. Dugan has been largely involved in fire service education, developing programs for the FDNY and as a lead instructor at Firehouse Expo and FDIC, and as a regular author and contributing editor for both Firehouse and Fire Engineering magazines. He specializes in topics related to truck company operations, building construction, and size-up.
