If it is a coffee table book about cars, I suggest that you prepare, prepare, prepare and then get
ready. That is what I have learned from doing a couple of books for Bob Marvin who owns The Shed in
Warroad, MN.

I was writing for a car publication and did a cover story on the Camaro, when it was published I
took a few copies to Bob as a courtesy. That was my first visit to The Shed, little did I know that Bob
would become a good friend, and I would spend more than a few hours in the Man Cave that is an annex
to The Shed.

Bob was happy with his copies of the publication and a short conversation revealed he would like
a coffee table book featuring the cars of his museum. I went home and did my home work on
photographing classic automobiles, then I spend a few visits to Warroad scouting locations that would be
suitable for the cars. Then I prepared some more, I read everything I could find about photographing cars,
I did test shots of the locations I had scouted. To the point of having a dozen locations and noting when
the light was best at each one and how it changed during the day.

Then I developed a schedule of how I would shoot the 100 plus cars over 4 weekends, shooting
two days per weekend. This allowed us time for bad weather if it did happen, show cars do not come out
in the rain.

Beginning around the 1950s, Roger Baillon, a French transportation and shipping magnate, started to assemble a collection of cars. Like any enthusiast, he lavished care and attention on his cars, and even had dreams of displaying the collection in his own museum. However, his business suffered a downturn in the 1970s, and he was consequently forced to sell some of the cars to settle some debts.

Fiat, in conjunction with Rizzoli, have published Fiat 500: The Design Book. While ostensibly about the model and its derivatives that have been in production since 2007, the current Cinquecento builds its reputation and identity on the back of an automotive classic. The original Fiat 500 of 1957-1960 was an original design based on a clean sheet of paper. It offered style, as well as economy and versatility, all qualities which propelled the little car into the history books as an icon.

I wouldn't have thought it, but after I finish school I'll actually write another report on a book. Maybe my teacher was right that you can always use that know how. Still, I'm a bit rusty when it comes to this. But of course I can tell you what the book has to offer for fans like us.

Everyone knows smart for its unconventional cars and in this book there are plenty of stories and information about exactly that. As a companion, there is of course an interview with Dieter Zetsche and insights into his time at Daimler.
