I am trying to run Midtown Madness on my Win 98SE system (Geforce FX 5600 256 MB with 45.23 drivers installed). The initial splash screen loads after which the game crashes with a Debug assertion failed error.
(it runs fine on my XP though).
Debug Assertion Failed!

- Try removing or renaming video.cfg and re-launch, see if there's any difference
- Reinstalling the game might help (but probably only if you've made some changes like upgraded your Windows for example).
- Is there a way to force software rendering somehow? Or if there isn't, maybe try with another graphics card.

In my admittedly limited experience with the games of this era, most of the problems back then were related to drivers.
And if you look at the docs you see this game is no different, multiple offenders are listed.
If the game works with software rendering then it's probably the drivers to blame.

It's not your fault, you reported the problem the best way you would, but this error message does not help in finding the cause for the error. The program tries to format text, but fails to provide the pattern according which it should be formatted. Probably the pattern is generate from some function that fails, and indicates the failure by returning "nothing" instead of a character sequence. This message is meant for the developer of the game, not the end user. And even for the developer this message on its own isn't helpful at all, because it does not point to a location in the code of the game (that failed to provide the message), but it points to the source code of Microsofts C library, to the point where it detects that there is no message.

If you can run the game on the exact same PC with the exact same driver version but with Windows XP, then it must be some incompatibility with the VCPP on Win98. A newer version of VCPP, if available, may help but this error may also be caused by a rare CPU fault, or this may be any of issues @mr.cat mentioned.

Thank you for your responses. It seems the issue is likely with the Cmedia 8738 sound card. On removing the audio drivers, the game runs without any error albeit with no music/sound. Then tried using a different sound card (1938s Solo-1) with WDM drivers and the game loaded as well with music/sound. However, there were frequent BSODs and hence had to revert to the Cmedia card. Wondering as to how the sound card driver could cause this error.

Unfortunately midtown madness's handling of audio isn't great. It can end up mixing up devices, and if it encounters an unknown error it will crash with the problem you've had. If you haven't already, try disabling all sound devices in windows apart from the one you are using. If that doesn't work, try launching with the -log param as mentioned earlier and posting the log in here.

Before Burnout popularised insane street races through city traffic, Midtown Madness was giving PC gamers their own high octane thrills. Players can choose from a variety of cars (and even a bus) and dash haphazardly through Chicago, vying to beat their opponents to the next checkpoint.

The game should install without any issues on a modern PC. Simply place the CD into your computers optical drive and follow the on-screen prompts. If the autorun installer does not start automatically, browse to the CD in Computer/This PC and manually run the setup.exe program.

Now, download the Midtown Madness Video Patcher from this page (link broken? Let me know here). Again, the download comes as a Zip file. Simply open the Zip file and copy the videopatcher2.exe file from inside the zip file to your Midtown Madness game folder. Now, run the videopatcher2.exe file. The window shown below should then appear.

Under Windows 8 we were only able to get the game playing in 640480 software mode. When we configured the game using the video patcher tool, everything appeared to work, but we were not able to select options from the games main menu.

I do have an issue on my PC, may be caused by Nvidia drivers, not sure; in all the menus the text (when entering keyboard controls or selecting graphics options) is skewed at 45 degree angle, making it really unreadable in the menus :-/

I have tried the multiplayer patch and after I have applied the patch when I run midtown.exe I get a message which says: Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application. Before I applied the patch, the game works without insert the disk. I have lost my original game disc for Midtown Madness so I dont know if the patch solve my problems or not. Please help!

I am able to select hardware mode the game lags if I use hardware mode. It works fine if I use software mode. On my old pc can I run the game even in hardware mode and the game works fine. But I want to play the game in hardware mode on the new pc without lag. I wonder what the problem is because the new pc has better cpu and video card than the old pc.
I wish also a patch so I can read the text and get the text normal.
On my new pc, I am able to select hardware mode but the game lags if I use hardware mode. Even if I use the resolution 640480. My video.cfg contains hardware mode already so the videopatcher doesnt help. Can anyone create a patch so I can run the game in hardware mode without lag? I know the problem is anything with ddraw.dll. I need to update DDRAW.DLL.

But, dgvoodoo 2.42 work for Midtown Madness 2 except, I cant see the intro videos.
Instead of an intro video, I see only a black screen but I can hear the sound. Why I only see a black screen instead of the intro videos? Is it any settings I have wrong or what is the problem?
Please help!

Ok, not funny. It worked once! Literally ONCE! I quit the game to write about how I got smooth gameplay on win10, then got back and again low fps!! Not funny at all. But maybe this will be a clue for someone else why this games behave this way.

Thanks!
It works for me to run Midtown madness in high resolution on windows 8 and 10
if I use dgvoodoo 2.54 and rename Midtown.exe to midtownmadness.exe.
But this may not work with amd cards.
