The Last Stone

While we ease back in our tufted arm chairs, stretch out on our
plush cushioned sofas surfing for our favorite reality show … I wonder
which stone will be the one that ricochets off the lips of this most
delicate of God creatures causing her breathlessness and abject
agony. While we worry about whether a celebrity should have to serve
their full ninety days and face the inconvenience of an additional
ninety days in rehab … I wonder which stone will be the one that has
the jagged edge that slices into her eyebrow just over her right eye
so that she no longer has the vision to see her executioners. While
we listen to the feckless meandering of the all too many talking heads
that fill our airwaves with empty rhetoric and divisiveness … I wonder
if it will be the first stone or the last stone that cruelly collapses
her perfect beauty that once was manifest.
Somewhere in a land far removed from our senses of sight, sound,
feel, touch, and taste, sit’s a woman awaiting to be executed for
adultery. She will be buried up to her shoulders or neck so that she
cannot move excepting the instinctual convulsing of her head. The
pile of stones that await her are carefully chosen. Each stone cannot
be so large as to hasten her death, but not so small that they are
denied the intention of inflicting the most severe and agonizing pain
possible. The crowd will gleefully chant and circle awaiting the
moment each can pick up and cherish their stone. Each will contest to
see who can deal the finishing blow. The authorities will look in
encouragement if not admiration of their justice. They will sleep
well this evening.
Who am I to interfere with such. We too here, in our home of the
brave and land of the free, are infused with the need, in a closed and
antiseptic environment to jam needles into peoples arms in the name of
justice. We call it humane because we Christians know. Should we
then too execute those who commit adultery? Oh … How long the lines
would be for those awaiting execution! Shall we not make any sin a
capital punishment? After all sin is sin is sin! So it will be that
long after this most deserving of God creatures is stoned to death,
removed from our thoughts and the headlines of today, shall we decry
that we have once again lost our shopping list and how awful our day
is going. Lord Jesus we desperately need you where are you?
