When An Atheist Asked About

I would like to share a story with you about an Atheist and .
Sometime during the mid nineteen thirties I was sitting in Grand
Central Station waiting patiently for the last train running that
evening. There was a cold breeze flowing through the lobby due to the
countless homeless taking aggressive ingress and egress due to the
biting cold outside. As I adjusted my lapels to chasten the cold
away, a sullied looking man walked up to me and noticed that I was
wearing a gold cross around my neck. I was startled as he reached out
to touch the cross, it had been given to me by my wife on our
anniversary last. He looked at me as if he understood that it was a
very expensive cross. Naturally, I instinctively cringed back for
fear of reprise and my life. Instantly he stopped, looked at me, and
asked if I believed in . Before I could answer, he asked if he was
being punished because he did not believe in . Almost arrogantly,
I told him of course I believed in and he should too. I then
asked what he wanted of me. Although he told me he wanted to know
of , I did not trust his motivations or intentions.
As he sat down on the floor in front of me, I wanted to take
leave and find another way to the safety of my home. I wanted in the
worst way to simply get away, and silently started to pray to ,
that he would redeem me from such travesty and responsibility. A man
in my station in life has no business entertaining such men as he. I
abruptly asked what he wanted to know about . I told him that
was all powerful, was all knowing, was all seeing. could
smite the mightiest of all people with a wave of his hand. Most of
all, could perform miracle upon miracle, and right all wrongs. He
then looked up at me, and asked why would not help him. I curtly
replied because you beg instead of barter, connive instead of
construct, because you lout instead of learn. has no providence
for such as you! I felt sure that he would now take his embarrassment
along with his filthy clothes and leave me alone.
He then moved even closer to me, giving me much pause, sharing with
me that he too at one time had a fine place to live, expensive
clothes, and a family to come home to. He once held a position of
prestige in an uptown firm, and in spite of the fact he did not
believe in , he worked in the soup kitchen nearby his office. Then
one day everything changed, he lost his job, his home, and ultimately
his family. Now he is the one being served in soup kitchen. He
asked me what he had done to deserve the lot in life he now drew? I
was both unimpressed and suspicious of his story. People such as I
are anointed by because of who and what we are. Nearing the end
of my patience, I was filled with joy when my train pulled into the
station. I silently said to myself, thank !
The next day once again upon waiting for my train, I heard
someone talking about the three homeless men who had frozen to death
the eve before. I prayed would close my ears to such, yet deep
within me, was the knowledge I knew one of the three, if just
briefly. So as each of you read my thoughts confined to this bit of
paper, it may not make much sense to you. I beg all of you to not do
as I have done. That is, to forget we all live in those empty spaces
where God is supposed to be. It is those spaces that are often the
most important. This story, much like life, does not make sense
without God. Now if you will excuse me, it is biting cold out here
and I must make my way back into the station to get warm.
