The Attack Within

When it comes to Church politics, I admit to being about as dumb
as a rock. I go to church to fill my senses with God, to let him help
soothe my troubled spirit from my weeks adventures and miss. I go to
repent of my sins however small, however grievous. I go to be
reminded that I need to forgive those who despitefully abuse me. I go
to pray for my town, city, and county, that God will heal all the
derision and divisiveness bringing we, all of his children back into
the peace and security of his arms. I go to hear his words brought to
me from a different perspective than my own. Some days I go, in spite
of the fact I do not feel like going, but it is what God wants me to
do. This day I am faced with a challenge perhaps insignificant to
others, however most disconcerting to me. At my Methodist church, I
was asked to participate in a survey.
The survey is not an innocuous one, that simply asks whether the
church pews are to uncomfortable. Whether the door greeters smile
enough or if the sermons are too long. The survey is being done by an
outside agency that is in disconnect from the church itself. The
survey asks invasive questions designed to corral and corner. The
survey seeks personal opinions regarding people in the church, that
are designed to pin peoples shoulders to the wall, that could easily
could cause them terrible unjust harm. The survey is sending in
“teams of people” to personally interview. Most astounding, the
survey promises secrecy and confidentiality to all those who partake
in its evolution and completion. The survey was instigated at the
behest of an internal church committee at the cost of up to $9,000
Dollars, with the explanation it will bring a new vision to the
church.
No doubt there were survey takers in the day of Moses, but thank
God there was a lack of available trees and paper. If a survey were
to have been taken regarding crossing the Red Sea, Moses may have very
well been thrown into the Red Sea instead of parting it. Speaking as
a rock, I realize that the church is imperfect, full of imperfect
people, leaders and non. Yet, do we not have a responsibility to
resolve internal problems, albeit if they do exist, from inside, and
not from some outside corporate entity motivated by money. Do we not
have a personality responsibility to place at least a modicum of trust
in our Priests, Pastors, Preachers, Rabbis, and Imams to act in
accordance to Gods wishes and ways? Or is that the point? To attack
the church from within by bringing in the without? Is this coming to
a church near you? Are you ready for it? Perhaps it is time the
sheep protect the Sheppard!
