The Last Needle

A couple of months ago, I wrote a piece called “The Last Stone”.
This day the stone has turned into a needle. Distinction? Yes.
Outcome the same. A person is dead. A couple of months ago, Iran was
ready to execute a woman for Adultery. This week America executed a
woman for solicitation of murder. Distinction? Yes. Outcome the
same. A person is dead. In the semantics of barristers, before her
execution, her lawyer said, “A good and decent person is about to lose
her life because of a system that is broken”. Could he be right? How
could America execute a woman who had a history of mental problems and
an IQ that was barely acceptable, while the two men she solicited to
do the murder were given life sentences.

I neither condone or justify what she did. Her crime was most
grievous by any stick of measure. Nor am I prepared to explain how I
would feel if it were someone close to me that was murdered. God
grant me the grace that I shall never have to experience such conflict
within my soul. As well, I pray most fervently to God that I should
never undergo such a test, and that God not put my feet to the fire.
Would Jesus call what has occurred justice, or revenge?

In the world of political brinksmanship, the leader of Iran
condemned us, for condemning Islam, and their intent to execute the
woman they now hold. He asked where the public Christian outcry was
for the American woman. Where was the world Christian out cry for the
American woman. In this ONE matter, could he be right? Can we as
Christians hold our heads up high to the Islamic world, buy comparing
sins, yet refusing to recognize that two others equally guilty were
given life sentences. How do we as Christians speak of grace on
Sunday, yet jam a needle into someone ‘s veins on Thursday. If Iran
in turn executes the woman they hold. Will some of her blood be on
our hands? Is this what Jesus would have wanted?
