I am using a Pixma MX922 (just purchased). The major use of the scanner is to scan documents for my records. I usually scan a number of documents at a time with different descriptive filenames. Having each time I start a new document, I need to restart ScanGear, go to settings to set the filename, scan the document, close scangear, is cumbersome and a waste of time. Besides that I can't check the pages before the file is created, to perhaps rotate one or even not convert one of the pages. This process is so bad, I am sorely tempted to return the MX922 and get a new Epson WF-3640, eventhough the MX922 is a better printer.
I knew that but that means extra keystrokes and time. First go to the settings page and change the filename and then return to the scangear page. Also, that means that I have to remember to go to the settings page. In the old Canon software, the filename was on the scangear page and you didn't have to think about and could quickly make the change in filename.
Once the broken package was fixed, if I recall correctly, I typed in "scangear" and Snaptic fetched the Scangear driver driver package and you could see the list of Canon MFP models it covered. I clicked on the box for my MFP model which then generated a popup asking permission to install all related "dependencies" for which I gave approval. I clicked on "Apply" and Synpatic did the rest. After that processed was finished the scanner showed up in Simple Scan and I was able to scan without issue.
In retrospect, I'm not sure that I didn't create the "broken package" problem with all my other attempts to fix the issue. I have a hunch that the real fix was just to going to Synaptic Package Manager, seaching for the scangear driver, satisfying the dependencies and checking the box for my model.
I was told by the Canon Vendor that I can use and install a TWAIN driver to achieve method one, and I can install the Canon ScanGear Tool to achieve method two.
I have attempted to install and configure the ScanGear Tool as documented by this website:
