Ancient Philosophy and Its Modern Appropriations

International Conference of the Department of Philosophy of Central European University

22-23 May 2020, Budapest, Hungary

Keynote Speakers

Dorothea Frede, Hamburg University

Lindsay Judson, Oxford University

Application Deadline

March 8th, 2020.

Ancient philosophers, through their incessant debates and discussions, produced a vast array of highly complex competing conceptions about the nature of reality, and its fundamental constituents. These debates produced scientific, metaphysical ethical and political theories which are highly interesting in their own right, but also in the way they set the frame for later discussions and provide the starting points of competing conceptual frameworks for later developments.

In our International Conference we invite participants to explore this fascinating field: ancient Philosophy and the dynamic exchanges of ancient philosophers on these topics, as well as the impact of those discussions and theories on modern and contemporary philosophical debates.

The conference will be held in Budapest from May 22nd to May 23rd, 2020. It intends to provide a forum for advanced students and researchers in their early career interested in ancient and contemporary philosophy, and their interrelationship.

Language of the conference is English. Participants will have 30 minutes to present their papers (the full text of the papers may be made available on the internet for the participants of the conference). This will be followed by 20 minutes of discussion and comments given by readers and Q&A. Submissions should be prepared for blind review.

Papers on Ancient Philosophy are welcome, especially those dealing with the following thematic areas:

Philosophy of mathematics

Philosophy of biology

Ethics and political philosophy
