Ranjith is or was a renowned Investigative journalist who had chosen to walk away from the job after a personal tragedy, choosing to raise his young daughter Arumpavai in Kolkata. Of course, he returns to his job, and with Chezhiyan being his friend and the son of his publisher and father figure Rathnam Pandian (Nizhalgal Ravi), he ends up investigating the murder only to realise that there is a larger network behind the murder of Chezhiyan and a few others. Can he track down the mastermind behind this sinister operation before more lives are lost?

On paper, Raththam is the kind of script that instantly creates intrigue. There's an intelligence behind the crimes that requires the protagonist to be cleverer, and the plot has the elements of a pulpy thriller - hate crimes, a criminal network of influencers that operates behind the scenes, data mining social media and grooming potential killers through psychological profiles and so on. There's also an antagonist who one would be hard-pressed to think of as a criminal, and does these crimes mainly for the high that they provide.

But the problem with Raththam is that all the excitement in these ideas never translate onscreen. The tone of narration is bland, much like the visual scheme (a dull blue that only adds a touch of artificiality to the sets and makes the proceedings seem duller) and the performances do not inject life into the writing. These only make the scenes that are slightly larger-than-life, like an escape from the Commissioner's office on a horseback, look far-fetched.

In the end, we are left with just a handful of memorable moments - a verbal face-off between the protagonist and antagonist that unfolds in the most harmless fashion on the surface while packing in a lot of tension inside, and their battle of wits as they try to be one step ahead of each other.
