I started not only the Bertolucci month with this film but it is my
first ever Bertolucci film to be seen. Like I joked around before I'm
not sure if that is a good or bad thing starting with his most
controversial film. Well it must be a good thing as I really liked the
film. I had some issues with the film but Brando's performance and
Bertolucci's visual style made the movie soar past all of those.
Brando was fantastic, it is one of the best performances I have ever
seen from him, (The scene with him at his deceased wife's bed and even
the introduction of his character walking under the train rails filled
with distraught are a few of many examples of his greatness). Some of
the issues I had were of the sub plot of the documentary filmmaker who
liked Jeanne mostly because he wanted her to be in his movie. He came
off very unbelievable and awkward to watch as he danced around
imagining all of these movie shots, I mean it was kind of humorous as
well because it pokes fun at Bertolucci and all of us movie lovers but
it kind of went over the top and did not fit in well with the rest of
the story. I also did not like the ending as it did not make sense
with the rest of the plot as well, I do not understand why she killed
him. But again even in the flaws there is something memorable about
them and Bertolucci's visuals made Brando's death scene a spectacle to
watch. 8/10

BOBBY,
you need to put SPOILERS in your title.
I have not seen this film yet and now I'm sorry I read your post.

Sorry Mindy, I just figured with the title of the film in the topic,
being a review, only people who have seen the movie would read. My
apologies though and I will be sure to do so next time to prevent any
future spoilings.

Did you know Maria Schneider died last year? I think she was hot in that
movie, however she did not aged well.

Yes and she regretted playing that part, especially because of the
butter scene.

It bothered her a lot. Probably only made more people see the movie though. And yes she was hot in that movie.

Indeed, it cast a negative stigma on her, causing deep emotional distress, not only by the scene itself – which by the way, she claimed the initial arrangement with Bertolucci, did not call for what supposedly turned out to be – but how people perceived her to have done the scene only to gain fame.  She came out of this movie to film ‘The Passenger’ with Antonioni and she looked terribly skinny, allegedly from the stress it had caused her.  Also, in ‘The Passenger’ there was a nude scene and she asked Antonioni to tone it down.  In my opinion, this nude scene is one of the more sublime moments in the movie.  Remember, she was very young in that movie – may be around 20 years old – it might have contributed how she shaped her career.  It seems that she never got good hold on it. And now she is gone…

I wonder if it would be as hard today, now that anal sex is more of a
norm then back then. Has there been any other main stream film with
anal sex after this one? I can't recall any.

I feel sad for her. It changed my image of Marlon Brando when I initially learned about it, and I think Bertolucci is partially to blame too for leaving the scene in the movie.

Oh, to answer your question Thorkell, here:

OK, I should have said anal sex between a man and a woman, not man and man :)

Jade http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113451/

Vivid http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0144669/

Swept Away http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073817/

Basic Instinct

Omen III http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082377/

Myra Breckinridge http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066115/

If you only count man on a woman (instead of the other way around), then Jade and Myra Breckinridge wouldn't count.

Myra Breckinridge has the greatest anal scene ever! It is worth seeing
that film just for that scene! :)

Thanks for the list Linda.
