Nowhere was Ella Fitzgerald's mastery of America's "classical" music more evident than on the legendary songbook albums of the 1950s. Of the songwriting giants covered in the series, the collection of songs by George and Ira Gershwin was arguably the greatest. OH, LADY, BE GOOD! BEST OF THE GERSHWIN SONGBOOK collects 17 of the strongest cuts from the 5 original LPs. Why Gershwin? Ella's painstaking attention to musical perfection helped turn many songs into standards, but Ira Gershwin's lyrics seemed to speak to Ella most directly of all. Ira, who was present at these 1959 sessions, wrote lyrics that conveyed a sense of lightness and romanticism, qualities that fit Fitzgerald's vocal style to a tee. Ella's unique abilities are showcased on her masterful version of "Someone To Watch Over Me." While many singers have captured the song's sense of longing, Fitzgerald refuses to overdo it. She won't be too dismayed if the man of her dreams doesn't come through the door, but wouldn't it be just great if he did? A similarly refined mood threads its way through "The Man I Love" and "A Foggy Day," while the more upbeat tunes ("'S Wonderful," "Nice Work If You Can Get It") swing confidently.

HaYehudim (lit. The Jews) are an Israeli hard rock band, formed in 1992 by married couple Tom Petrover and Orit Shachaf. The band has achieved tremendous success in Israel despite commercial disregard in its early history.
The band sings almost entirely in Hebrew, and is most known by Israeli fans for its fast, upbeat songs and loud vocals. Many of their songs are charged with political and ideological flavour, though since none of their songs are clearly political in nature, much room is left for interpretation.
The band's first album, Separate Reality ( Metziut Nifredet, also translated Different Reality) was released in 1995 through Hed Arzi Music. The album gained mainstream attention only a few years after its release, supposedly due to media disregard. It became gold in 1998, just a month before the release of the band's second and self-titled album. One studio album and two live albums have since followed.

The Afro-Peruvian style heard on The Soul of Black Peru compilation originated hundreds of years ago from the Spanish slave trade. The music is a mix of African, Spanish, and Andean traditions, due to the fact that the slaves who came to Peru were not from one specific region, so they did not have a common language to communicate with. It's easy to break the music down and see which culture contributed what -- the lyrics are all sung in Spanish (Spain), have a slight melancholy approach (similar to the Yaravi form from the Andes), and boast interesting rhythms (Africa). The musical form is just starting to catch on in other parts of the world, and deservedly so. And since this is heartfelt, emotional music, fans outside of the world music circle can easily grasp and appreciate it. Ranging from Manuel Donayre's "Yo No Soy Jaqui" to Chabuca Granda's "Lando" (Luaka Bop Records head David Byrne even contributes a track, "Maria Lando"), The Soul of Black Peru is a true musical treasure.

Mutya Mutya Buena, co-founding member of the multi-million selling Sugababes, follows last year's duet with George Michael with the hugely anticipated release on May 14th - digital, May 28th - physical, of her debut solo single "Real Girl". WATCH CLIP

The single, which features a sample from Lenny Kravitz's global chart-topper "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over", is taken from Mutya's debut album also entitled "Real Girl", which will be released on June 4th via the recently re-activated 4th & Broadway label.

When the 22-year-old from Kingsbury, north-west London left the Sugababes, she was leaving more than a Triple Platinum pop group with an international fanbase and a healthy haul of awards. She was leaving a life she had known, in one form or another, since she'd been eleven years old. 'I wanted a change. I had my daughter Tahlia, and found it pretty unfair to give birth to a baby that I was not gonna be able to look after. I didn't want anyone else bringing up my child."

"Real Girl", is a collection of songs that unveil the R&B heart that always lay beneath Ms. Buena's Sugababes' contributions, but never abandons the joy of pure pop. Its supporting cast of composers, producers and artists - including Amy Winehouse, Groove Armada and George Michael - all keep the quality effortlessly high without distracting from the strength of Mutya's voice and personality.

There is a certain rawness, an edge, present throughout the recording and it was Mutya's idea to keep the sound flawed and spontaneous, to show off the humanity, as well as the technique, of her vocals. "Real Girl" already contains a hit single, Mutya's duet with George Michael, "This Is Not Real Love", which hit the charts last November and introduced Planet Pop to Mutya the solo artiste. Recording with George gained Mutya entry to a very select and exclusive group of female singers that George has worked with throughout his long and hugely successful career, the other three artistes being Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Mary J Blige. It was during the recording that they both realised they had attended the same school, Kingsbury High, and had the same music teacher. The pair hit it off so well that George invited Mutya to be the only guest on his tour!

Another potential single is the Salaam Remi-produced "B Boy Baby" which features Amy Winehouse, another artist who chooses very carefully who she works with. Based around The Ronettes's classic "Be My Baby", "B Boy Baby" is transformed, in the hands and voices of Mutya and Amy, into a slyly dirty tribute to a hip hop-loving boyfriend. Other standout cuts include "Out Of Control", an '80s dance pop- influenced collaboration with Groove Armada, the trio of powerfully sung R&B scorchers "Just A Little Bit", "Suffer For Love" and "Wonderful" and the dark, distressed "Strung Out". 'Its about drugs,' Mutya confirms. 'Its sung from the perspective of a friend standing there watching someone kill themselves. It's a wake-up call. I'm no saint, and I try not to judge, but I know right from wrong."

"I love it so much. I put a lot of emotion into singing it.' "It's Not Easy" brings it all back to the reason this album exists: Mutya's daughter Tahlia. Mutya reunited with Felix Howard, Paul Simm and Sam Frank (producers and writers of "Overload" from the Sugababe's debut "One Touch") pays tribute to her daughter. Like most of the album "It's Not Easy's" lyrics are sharp and concise enough to ensure Mutya won't be misunderstood. 'During the Sugababes people did misunderstand me. But you've got to remember that I started when I was fourteen. When you're that young you don't know much and you're not really gonna be sitting there taking in the media training 'cos you're not concerned. I grew up in north-west London and I didn't know any better!"

If "Real Girl" presents her soul credentials for inspection, it's also a varied set, with its twelve songs giving approving nods to all manner of rock, pop and urban stylings. Blame her mum, her dad and her seven music-loving siblings. As well as the likes of Mariah, Whitney and TLC, Mutya also fell in love with her dad's T.Rex and Black Sabbath records. "I had a brother into hip hop, another into jungle, another into garage and me into R&B and funky house. That's why I can jump into different types of music.'

A funk/soul music vocalist of the '90s, Paula Lima started to sing in 1992 in São Paulo, taking part in the band Unidade Móvel (later Unidade Bop), having recorded two years later the CD Quebrando o Gelo do Clube. She participated, in 1995, in the recording of Jorge Ben Jor's 23 as a backing vocalist and became a member, in 1997, of the soul music band Zomba (with which she recorded the independent Zomba), having performed in shows by the rap duo Thaíde & DJ Hum (also recording a track for them). In 1998, she joined the funk big band Funk Como Le Gusta, recording with them the album Roda de Funk in 1999. Her earliest solo performances are from this period, at the Hipódromo Up (Rio de Janeiro) and at São Paulo. Lima also participated in the soundtrack of the film Amores Possíveis. In January 2001, the band performed at the Humaitá Pra Peixe festival at the Sérgio Porto cultural center in Rio with special guests Daúde and Gerson King Combo. On her first solo album, É Isso Aí, Lima was given a new song by Ben Jor, "A Paz Dançando na Avenida." The Iditarod - Kleine [2007/MP3/223 (VBR)] (Experimental)

Kleine was released in 2002 on tape only. Though it was recorded over the course of five years, this is probably their most coherent output - the record starts with mostly acoustic parts, mixed with more psychedelic parts all into a whole. Towards the end, the more direct songs merge perfectly with the tape and drone experiments. On this record, Karin Wagner and Jeffrey Alexander (Secret Eye Records/Black Forest/Black Sea) get support from an impressive list of guest musicians: Alasdair Galbraith on violin, B'eirth (In Gowan Ring) on harp, Margie Wienk (Fern Knight) on cello and Matt Everett (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) on violin. Kleine came out around the same time as their second CD "The ghost the elf the cat and the angel", but shows a more experimental and personal side of Iditarod. Therefore, its probably the best hidden gem the band has ever put out. This CD re-release comes in a unique cardboard packaging, based on the original artwork. FOLK/ACID FOLK. Due early July.

Cafu started his musical carreer at young age with playing trumpet and drums. Later on he used to play in bands which differed in style from funky-bluesrock to hard metal and he took lessons in a jazz school.

Later, in the year 1997 he got in touch with electronic music and started Dj'ing Trance and Psy-Trance. In 2002, he decided to produce his own music.

Since then, Progressive Trance got more and more important for him and this style became his main focus. Beneath that, he is still working on funky-acid-jazz side projects. After his frist release on Aphonix Records, he lately made aware of himself with tracks on labels such as Domo, Mikrokosmos, Blue Tunes and Iboga Records, presenting a deep groovey progressive style.

With the release 'Wake Up' on Plusquam Records, he presents his first full length album...

Flickerstick - Welcoming Home The Astronauts (Sony/Epic) [2001/FLAC/Lossless] (Rock)
After Flickerstick won VH1's Band on the Run competition, their debut album, Welcoming Home The Astronauts, was re-recorded by Sony/Epic for major label release.

The original, independent version is found here.

This version differs mainly from the original by rearrangement of track order, dropping of 'Right Way To Fly', and the addition of 'Smile' and 'Execution By X-mas Lights'. Additionally, 'Sorry...Wrong Trajectory' now has its intro as part of the track as opposed to appended at the end of the previous track, and 'Coke' is a castrated, shell of its former self thanks to Sony's too cozy relationship with Coca-Cola, Inc. (what's wrong with drinking coke naked? :)).

This is an older, personal rip so no logs, but I can attest that it was ripped with EAC in Secure Mode to FLAC from the retail disc and has been listened to multiple times. If that's good enough for you, enjoy it in lossless.

A singer/songwriter in the subversive Greenwich Village folk scene of the late '60s and '70s, with several songs lent to the Holy Modal Rounders, Michael Hurley maintained an infrequent solo career into the '90s but was more famed for his writing credits. Born on December 20, 1941, in Pennsylvania, he migrated to Greenwich Village by the early '60s and was ready to sign a major record deal when he contracted mononucleosis; after spending several years in the hospital, Hurley returned to music and released a Folkways album in 1964 titled First Songs. Though he was inactive through the rest of the '60s, several songs from his first LP were borrowed by both the Holy Modal Rounders and the Youngbloods, who signed Hurley to their Raccoon label in 1970. He delivered two albums for Raccoon, Armchair Boogie and Hi-Fi Snock Uptown, but was inactive again by 1972.

Four years later, Holy Modal Rounders' leader Peter Stampfel recruited Hurley for a 1976 project, Have Moicy. The group's self-titled album was critically praised, landing recommendations for Album of the Year by the Village Voice and Top 20 LPs of the '70s by Rolling Stone. Hurley's prominent place on the album -- guitar, fiddle, several lead vocals -- gave notice that he was ready to resume his solo career, and he signed to the folk label Rounder in 1977. Hurley released only two LPs for the label (Long Journey and Snockgrass), spending most of his time on his farm in Vermont or playing sideman on several albums. He resurfaced occasionally, recording LPs in 1984, 1988, 1995, and 1999.

A truly delightful singer-songwriter mix-up from the Vermont-based Hurley, a man who has one of those cheerfully lived-in faces. The cover painting tends to get puzzled and startled reactions for its surreal landscape filled with naked folks and instrument-playing wolves, but that's just the package. Hurley's songwriting tends to switch from the serious to the satirical at the drop of a hat (sometimes in the middle of a song), which can result in unexpected laughter -- he's a fine man with a witty line. The musical is congenial, no worries there. Hurley is the sort of artist who leaves listeners regretting that he doesn't record more. The 1997 reissue comes with an additional cut.

Brujería is Spanish for "witchcraft".

Essentially an all-star death metal side project that
refuses to tour or divulge their identities (they go by
aliases and wear disguises for publicity photos),
Brujeria is led by Fear Factory members Dino Cazares
(guitar) and Raymond Herrera (drums) and includes various
members from Faith No More, Down by Law, and Napalm
Death, among others. Despite their unconventional career
thus far, Brujeria has built a large fan base within the
metal underground, issuing such albums as 1993's Matando
Gueros, 1995's Raza Odiada, 2000's mini album Marijuana
and Brujerizmo, and in 2001, the compilation Mextremist
Greatest Hits.

A nice compilation of a dozen and a half album cuts,
singles, and a few rarities, Mextremist Greatest Hits
does a good job of representing all sides of the band,
from the earlier straightforward and dead-panned serious
death-thrash to more experimental cuts that paradoxically
are more overtly silly, especially "Marijuana," grunted
to the tune of "Macarena" and in Spanish, like everything
else the band has ever done.

Although Chelsea Girl (1967) was the first long-player from the German-born Christa Päffgen, it was not her debut solo effort. Prior to becoming involved with the Velvet Underground and while under the direction of Andrew Loog Oldham, Nico issued an obscure 7" on the mod pop Immediate label. The song selection on that 1965 single -- which featured a cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "I'm Not Sayin'" and an Oldham co-composition with Jimmy Page called "Last Mile" -- foreshadowed the eclectic nature of this LP. Although the dissolution between the vocalist and core instrumental quartet was not without its share of acrimony, the non-percussive contingent of the Velvet Underground is heavily featured on Chelsea Girl: along with then-unknown singer/songwriter Jackson Browne (guitar) -- the vocalist's concurrent love interest -- there is Lou Reed (guitar), Sterling Morrison (guitar/bass), and John Cale (piano/bass/viola), who contrast what they had been doing with the larger combo. These sides are decidedly "unplugged," providing a folky and Baroque setting for Nico's dark and brooding vocal inflections. There is an introspective foresight in Browne's "Fairest of the Seasons," "These Days," and "Somewhere There's a Feather." The minimalist string section features a quaint, yet effective arrangement giving the material a distinctly European feel. These orchestrated folk leanings are similar to the sound emanating from other burgeoning groups such as the Incredible String Band, Pentangle, and the Fairport Convention spin-off Fotheringay.The same can be said of her almost unrecognizable reworking of Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Mine." The noir black-widow charm ultimately saves the performance, as does Cale's remarkable classical intonations. With Reed's "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams" -- a track which actually predates the Velvet Underground -- there is a sense of history that Nico brings to her interpretation, as if the melody were, in fact, a traditional German folk tune. There is a palpable distinction between those lighter cuts and the menacing Velvet Underground-conceived material. At the center of the project are the extended "It Was a Pleasure Then" and the stunning semi-autobiographical Reed/Morrison title track. The juxtaposition of such honest and at times harrowing imagery to Nico's inherently bleak delivery is nothing short of an inspired artistic statement which has since long outlasted its initial socially relevant context -- similar to the more modern contributions of Laurie Anderson, Ann Magnuson, and Patti Smith. An unqualified masterpiece.
