It is often said that Shahrukh Khan wouldn't have been such a huge star without the Chopra and Johar family. After watching Mere Yaar Ki...Whatever, I am convinced that even they wouldn't have been so successful in the last ten years without the King Khan.
This moderately budget movie is considered the 'ideal' launch pad for Uday Chopra, son of movie magnate Yash Chopra and brother of Aditya Chopra. But does a disturbingly stocky and a Chimpanzee lookalike (That's what I overheard in the lavatory during the intermission) make for a Bollywood star. Why not! After all 'yahan sab chalta hai. Chalaane waala aana chahiye'.
Now, this Chopra dude apes Shahrukh Khan to the first and the last expression. The twisted eyebrows, the 'whacky' sense of humour, the impish-n-childlike arrogance, downplaying the heroine and a universally adored-n-hated syndrome. But does he succeeds at all! After all, even Shahrukh copies Dilip Kumar. Check out the next para for answer......
Well, he fails miserably. The only few occasions when he tries to be himself, he seems confident and endearing to a small degree. One doesn't feel like buying when he addresses himself as the ''Magic Man''. Not You dude. It is only when you see a bad copy that one realises as to how effortlessly the original has burned the screen with his timeless effervescence now-n-again.
There's nothing new about the story. The same TV soap opera ambience, shaadi, some barbaadi, lots of gaana bajaana (The music is a plus point), a few likable jokes, good cinematography and decent performances from Jimmy Shergil and Bipasha Basu.
I know, I have given lots of thumbs down to this funeral of a marriage saga. But I would also say that it has a big plus attached to it as well. Its a Hit! And trust me, that's a big achievement, considering some really big films have flopped this year.
When names like Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Shahrukh, Salmna, Madhuri and Aishwarya haven't set the cash registers jingling for more, this small film has made a decent impression as far as the collections goes.
If being a hit is the only criterion, then do watch it. I am sure, people associated with it like Uday, Jimmy, Sanjana, Bipasha, director Sanjay Gadhwi and music directors Jit-Pritam shall benefit for sure. But, if you don't want to watch a Bally Sagoo like remix of erstwhile films, then wait for better days ahead. They are bound to be here.
