The OS/2 versions 2.x of rar.exe (e.g. the last purely natively
compiled version 2.50) and also DOS versions of 2.x contain file
OPTIONS.TXT with the following line:
-std STDout mode
This was related to the fact that RAR versions 2.x included
functionality of "Full-screen interactive interface (Optional)"
(quoting from RAR.TXT included with these versions). This referred to
text-mode UI (using semigraphic characters) similar to NC/FC which was
usable both for interactive use (similar to WinRAR available in later
versions, just using TUI rather than GUI), but also used with actions
directly started from command-line (e.g. adding files to an archive,
extracting archives, etc.). Option -std was used to enforce showing
progress and results of these actions using standard output to the
console rather than using this TUI (coloured, with the semigraphic
characters). As far as I can see, this option (-std) had no real use
with later (3.x+) versions of RAR, but it was silently ignored
(probably for compatibility reasons). Apparently, this has changed
with the latest versions of RAR (those included in WinRAR). Also, this
option was never supported for standalone unrar executables.
