Of Working Class Heroes & the Hacienda Luisita Massacre
Wednesday, November 30, 2011
The Central
603 Markham Street, Toronto (map & info)
*Food and drinks can be purchased at the bar.*

November 30 is the birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio, Father of
the Philippine Revolution of 1896, in which peasants and workers rose
against Spanish colonization.

Today, the Philippine working class continues to struggle against
exploitation by foreign interests and the local ruling classes.

16 November 2004. The Hacienda Luisita Massacre, on land owned by the
family of the current president, led to the death of 14 farmers
including women and children and the wounding of 200 others.

24 November 2011. Seven years later, the Philippine Supreme Court
ordered the distribution of the hacienda lands to the farmers. Yet,
the landowners are still trying to make maneuvers that would take back
this victory from them.

Learn more about the story of Hacienda Luisita and how it relates to
the overall political structure of the Philippines WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER
30, at 6pm. *With a report-back from ANAKBAYAN-Toronto and PNJP
members who have recently visited Hacienda Luisita.

What are haciendas? How did they come to be? What is the link between
land and power in the Philippines? What is the link between power and
poverty? Why is this an important issue for Filipinos and Canadians?
