I just recently found the FIGnition project via the inter-webs and have just received my kit today (along with the FIGkeys interface). Looking forward to getting it built and working over the next week or so. Just thought I'd pop in and introduce myself and say hello.

Cheers,
Allen

Thank you Carl,

The initial build went very well and took less than an hour. I will be testing all of the connections and hope to have power up by tomorrow evening. Then on to the FIGkeys unit. I purchased a small usb+ps/2 keyboard from Adafruit that is supposedly good for micro-controllers (low current drain and proper ps/2 interface I hope).

Regards,
Allen

Hi Allen,

Hey, I'm glad the build went well  :-) Can you verify that you're not using the dodgy MAPLIN solder? I use Ag 5%, Sn 95.5%, Cu 0.5%, which is code N32AR (white label, blue text on the reel), not the awful cheaper stuff with a blue label.

Hi Julz,

I use really good Kester solder. I bought a 1 lb. spool in 2004 and it has been used (successfully) on several electronics (mostly Amateur Radio) kits. I don't know what I'm going to do when I eventually run out.

Regards from Sunny Kent, WA USA (sort of a UK tie there)

Hi Allen,

I used to live in Kent! Now I live a bit north, in Shoreline. I built a FIGnition about a year ago, but haven't used it much because of the lack of keyboard. Now I have the FIGkeys kit and plan to build that soon.

We should get together and compare notes. Are you a Forth fan?

Hi Ron, small world - wonder if there any other FIGnition users in the Puget Sound area?

It's funny that while I've looked and thought about a Raspberry Pi, I haven't gotten around to getting one, even though I've run Linux on and off (currently dual-booting
Mint on an xp machine)

As to my Forth experience, I was familiar with the language and dabbled with it briefly in the late '90s but didn't really get it back then. I have experience (primarily hobby) with other languages and was at one time fairly decent with Perl. For some reason I decided to re-visit Forth recently, probably due to my long time love of HP RPN calculators. This time it is making much more sense and I am working through the Starting Forth and Forth Application Techniques books. I guess at this point I would call myself a fan of Forth.

Though I don't have many yet I would love to compare notes sometime -

Cheers for now,
Allen
