WHAT YOU (probably) ALREADY KNOW:
FIGMENT, an interactive arts festival, has been taking place in NYC on Governors Island for the past 5 years. FIGMENT is an environmentally-responsible event. Nothing is sold at FIGMENT and no one makes a profit. The event is entirely free. We raise money through individual donations and grants. FIGMENT demonstrates what the arts can be: participatory, bursting with creativity and born from the desire to share imagination and invention between artists and the public. FIGMENT is a grassroots effort, of over 300 volunteers who work hard to make a gift of art to NYC.
Annually, over 22,000 people attend FIGMENT. Hundreds of artists create work. We envision every guest as a participant, so that FIGMENT itself can be seen as one large art project. At FIGMENT, it’s okay to touch the art: in fact, it’s encouraged. We believe education comes from engagement. The result is art as dialogue, forming the basis for a collaborative, constructive community. Children (and adults) play, have fun, and look at the world with fresh eyes. Many New Yorkers are transitional, arriving here to pursue education or a career, and then ultimately relocating elsewhere. FIGMENT seeks to provide a community-based experience that is open to everyone, giving even the most temporary of residents a place to belong. In a time when so many people are struggling to get by, FIGMENT provides a place where you don’t need currency to be rich. We are proud to celebrate an abundance of inspiration as our participants all bring gifts that they have to offer and share the wealth.
