Hi YelloSno80. I assume you've turned captions off in Settings. To turn them off while watching a program on Apple TV 4, swipe down, then left on the remote touchpad. This should display the Audio options, and you can swipe around to turn off captions.

I just had the same problem, but when I went to the Settings > Audio & Video, I saw that Subtitles was set to English. I opened that menu and was able to turn it to the 'off' position. Problem was solved for me. Give that a shot.

Actually, found the solution. For some reason, when using ATV, if the captions have been turned on (in Settings/Audio&Video...) and then turned off, Netlix films will still show closed captions. The captions have to be turned off in Netflix.

Here's how: While the Netlix video is playing, press and hold the 'select' button on the Apple remote (not, as noted elsewhere on this board, the menu button. The button to press and hold on the remote is the large silver button in the center of the click wheel.) A short menu will appear with two options: English or Off. Choose Off and the captions will disappear for the Netflix film you're watching.

If someone watching Netflix on your account used soft subtitles to watch a foreign film, you might feel puzzled when you again open it and find the action covered up by unnecessary yellow text. Under this condition, you need to remove or turn off closed subtitles/captions on Netflix Apple TV, Roku TV, Samsung smart TV, etc. Fortunately, we have your demand covered here, irrespective of what device you're using.

Check your Netflix app version first before you enable closed subtitles or captions on Netflix movie or TV shows, since different Netflix app versions vary in some minor settings. Follow the specific guide based on your application version.

Providing, unluckily, Netflix subtitles are still missing or not working on your TV or smartphones, follow the workarounds mentioned in this Netflix subtitles troubleshooting article to make subtitles right.

Once in a while, you need to change your closed subtitles or captions on Netflix Apple TV, Roku TV, Samsung TV or mobile devices. Generally, Netflix shows the 5-7 most relevant languages grounded on your location and language settings. Therefore, you can change soft subtitles on Netflix among the highly related 5-7 languages. Steps are:

Step 3. Tap Dialog icon at either the top or bottom of the user interface. Unlike mobile device iPhone iPad or Android, language options on your smart TVs might appear at the bottom without the dialog icon. In such case, choose from the languages shown or tick Other to see all available language options.

Note: subtitles on, off and change are only applied to soft subtitles (aka. closed subtitles). As for hardcoded subtitles, it's out of the question to turn on/off hardcoded subtitles on Netflix, let alone change subtitle. Hardcoded subtitles (aka. open subtitles) are embeded into movie or TV show video image. They're integrated with video image, not a separate subtitle track file. If you insist on removing hardcoded subtitles, you have to rely on a video subtitle remover software to crop subtitles from video frame one by one.

Step 2. The subtitle option you previously chose will pop up. Select the Off option under Subtitles. So far, you successfully remove subtitles from Netflix movies or TV shows on Apple TV temporarily.

Indeed, knowing how to remove subtitles from your shows is a valuable Netflix tip for Windows users. It's important to note that, unlike the mobile app, Netflix for Windows doesn't automatically pause your video when you're adjusting the subtitles. If every second of your show is crucial to you, remember to press pause before beginning the above procedure. The process is straightforward, similar to the mobile app:

Extended Info: For subtitle options, the Caption Settings menu offers you with 3 different options to adjust the subtitles to your preference: Digital Caption Options, Caption Mode, and Separate Closed Caption.

If you follow the above steps to turn subtitle options from On to None on your Samsung Smart TV, but subtitles still won't turn off, you're then highly suggested to try another device to stream Netflix content. Because this problem only occurs on older versions of the Netflix app, disable Netflix closed captions or subtitles by using an alternate device.

I don't know how to do it with apple tv, but I do know how to do it with Iphone. I don't have an apple tv yet. If you go to settings, and then general, then accessibility, then voiceover, then verbosity, you'll see something like media description. Choose what you want from there and most items on netflix, itunes, and amazon prime will have subs read to you.

A nice benefit of subtitles and closed captions on Hulu is that you can choose English or Spanish, when available, format captions, and each profile can manage captions independently. They can also be turned on and off based on the content being watched.

Cox Contour TV is a cable service from Cox Enterprises. Cox also offers a streaming device that works with any TV and provides access to Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+ and other streaming services.

A streaming device, aka streaming media player, is a physical piece of hardware. It connects to your TV through the HDMI port and uses your internet connection to stream online content to your TV, making it possible to access all your favorite services in one location.

You can turn captions for Roku on or off for the device itself or within individual channels that you download. Note that the availability of captions through Roku depends on the service provider offering them.

Look at Menu>settings>accessibility>closed captions and adjust to whatever works better for you. This has been an ongoing issue here and there are several threads if you search for them. Don't know if there is a solution in the works or not.

I have tried all the options available in the mentioned commands, but the options are old and dated. Fios needs to change its system to something competitive with Apple, Netflix, Xfinity, and any other streaming service with closed captions. I would like someone knowledgeable from Fios to address this soon.

Is there any way your TV can create the captions instead of the Fios box? It might have better capabilities. I don't think captions are high on the priority list given some of the major problems that need to be addressed. There is a new update being sent out, APR 7.9 but I don't know if it has any fixes for the captions. Check your box under system information and see what APR version you are on.

I was just informed the Fios one renders captions in 1080 resolution and the 1100 boxes use 480 resolution. If you are using an 1100, that is the issue. You also might want to look at the TV's sharpening setting. Too high and it will add artifacts to the captions.

Thank you. I have for both TV's Fios One boxes. I insist this has to do with Fios software as when we are watching Netflix or Amazon Prime or any other streaming service, captions look great. I tried to use the TV captions, but have not found the way to use them when watching Fios cable. If anybody can show me how?

My parents have a Smart TV and use Direct TV. They use closed captioning, as, at 87 years old, sometimes they have difficulty hearing. They are able to change the font size in the regular TV shows they watch and on Netflix, but we are having a hard time changing font size on Amazon Prime. Have followed Amazon directions but the font size is still the same size on TV.

As someone who sometimes has trouble hearing what characters in my favorite shows are saying, I get where ssmtmb's parents are coming from. So I was happy to try helping myself, using Amazon's posted instructions to figure out the solution to the problem. That's when I ran into a technical roadblock of my own.

I do most of my Amazon Prime Video watching on my 4th-generation Apple TV. And those instructions in the link above don't work with Apple's set-top box, as an Amazon spokesperson told me when I contacted the company to ask what I was doing wrong. (The relationship between Apple and Amazon when it comes to streaming video is ... complex.)
