By default, footnotes and endnotes are numbered sequentially for the entire document, but you can restart the numbering (or the sequence of symbols) at the beginning of every page or document section (after each section break).
I cannot figure out how to insert a footnote in a document. I have followed the instructions in Help, as well as those given in the forum, but nothing seems to work for me. No matter what I do, an option to insert a footnote does not appear for me. I have tried to customize my toolbar, but a button to "insert" is not available. Help!
I figured it out. I did not have the shortcuts bar turned on. I turned it on by going to Settings: General/Keyboard/Shortcuts. The Shortcuts bar now appears on the bottom of the screen, thus allowing me to access the footnote function. Voila!
I've recently switched over to using Jekyll on Github Pages for my various blogs, and love that I can just push Markdown to Github and they handle the processing. I'd like to continue using it this way (rather than running Jekyll locally and just pushing the pre-generated site to Github), since the Github UI makes it easy to add and tweak posts if I'm not at my own machine.
When you want to use redcarpet there seems to be no convenient solution right now.Although Redcarpet 3 supports footnotes with the syntax you've used, it is not included into Jekyll, because Redcarpet 3 removes Ruby 1.8 compatibility (source).
I have a document that requires a footnote in a particular place. The footnote is near the end of the paragraph, which is near - but not too close - to the end of the page. The paragraph that the footnote indicator is in flows over to the next page, dispite there being enough room on the page to, at least, start the footnote, leaving a large white space at the bottom. (It should then flow over to the next page - which normally it does.)
I will try to upload screenshot of what I mean. (Due to the sensitive nature of the document, I am unable to screenshot the actual version, but the test one does the same thing.) (Also, please bear with me, as I am not too familier with this forum and I might screw up the upload.)
When Writer reaches the footnote anchor, it hass to make a decision about the location of the footnote. Here there is already no footnote, so everything is open. Footnote size is known (but it does not really matter as it can spill over onto next page). Writer sees whether the bottom space can hold the spacing between text and notes, the separator, spacing between separator and note, and at least one note line.
Since standard action would leave only one line at top, the preceding line is borrowed to be transferred at top of new page. Since this line holds the note, the note is also moved to next page, leaving this ugly blank space.
Adding a footnote in Pages is easy and can be done in a couple of different ways. So open your Pages document and move your cursor within your content where you want the footnote. Then, do the following:
In my document LaTeX has chosen to continue a long footnote on the next page. That's usually just fine. But in this case the page break in the footnote is inside a url, so the whole second page is a clickable link in the pdf. I could probably avoid that with some rewriting, but a TeX solution would be nice.
I am trying to figure out why Framemaker sometimes refuses to display a horizontal divider line above the footnote section of certain pages. I created a video that shows the problem: =VEQgp9KDbDo In this video page 370, above footnote 21, no horizontal divider line appears. Yet, on pages 369, 371 and 372, the divider line DOES appear.
Window > Refresh or Ctrl+L will force a refresh and it will reappear immediately. It doesn't happen when you go from page to page either with the page navigation buttons, or with the keyboard, which is how I prefer to navigate for this specific reason. Give it a shot and let us know if that takes care of the one you showed us.
EDIT: here's one more FrameMaker idiosyncrasy. If the footnote is not on the same page as the reference number, this will happen, and refresh will not fix it. (I see it as FrameMaker's way of alerting us to the problem.) In that situation, open up footnote properties and enable the check box that tells the footnote number and the note to be on the same page. This is a relatively new feature of FrameMaker, and only available in the later versions. Prior to the arrival of that checkbox, I used to have to reflow the text manually.
Thanks Barb, but this is not a refreshing issue. I mentioned that in my first video. CTRL+L has no affect whatsoever on the missing footnote horizontal dividing line. Even when I print the page, the horizontal line is still missing. This proves this is not a display/rendering issue. See =srAIGvCN_NQ
Footnote 21 is visible at the bottom of the page, but the first footnote number in the text is 22. You will need to adjust the text so that both the number 21 and footnote 21 are on the same page. That will resolve this issue.
Thanks, but your suggestion "adjust the text so that both the number 21 and footnote 21 are on the same page" is simply not feasible. I would require me to make up/dream up new content in order to push the reference onto the next page. I can't be having FM forcing me to write more content just because it can't handle proper footnote placement. Framemaker 11 is in control of placing the footnotes, not me. BTW, there is no "Keep footnote with reference" option in FM 11. As you can see in the attachment, if I force the "Neil R. Lightfoot" paragraph onto the next page, I will have a huge hanging whitespace gap at the bottom of column 2 on page 369.
For context, I have worked in every version in FrameMaker since version 3 and my documents are very footnote intensive, so I have more experience than most working with extensive footnotes. Unfortunately, that means that I am quite sure that the solution is to a.) put the note and number on the same page manually or b.) upgrade to a version of FrameMaker that has the checkbox to take care of it automatically. In v11, I used to go back several pages to adds bits of space within and between paragraphs to push the reference to the next page, while ensuring that the extra spacing was not obvious.
I'd also like to add that FrameMaker 11 reached end-of-life years ago so there will be no official support for 11 from Adobe, nor will there be any additional patches released. You are welcome to come back and ask us FrameMaker questions at any time, however. Most of us who volunteer here have been using FrameMaker for quite a while, and we used version 11 when it was current so we will still be able to answer your questions.
You can use footnotes to add references in your Google Doc. In documents that are in pages format, you can add page numbers, and you can also include headers and footers to add content to every page in the document.
Alternatively, include the relevant footnote on the new page by grabbing the text of any footnotes discovered within the relevant passage, and adding them either to the new page or within the embed itself.
Hello to all. I need a bit of help using iOS pages. I have to create some foot notes for a paper and I don't have pages on my computer as of yet so decided I'd work on this on my phone until I get pages next march. I want something to turn in to my professor by the beginning of march. lol!
Uh, wow? in the years that I've used iOS, I never thought to look in the edit menu. that seem a bit cumbersome but yeah. I'll give that a try the next time I save my paper in the cloud. I have it saved locally now.
My book file is attached with the blank footnotes. If you want the footnotes to appear, tighten the Tracking on the big paragraph on page 92 and go into the footnotes on page 93 and remove the three blank lines. It should reappear.
Hi, this is a known issue in 2.1.1. Notes were a new feature in v2 and there are still a few kinks being worked out. It can occur with both footnotes and sidenotes but not with endnotes. It seems to be related to how the notes are positioned which is why adding and removing text can make notes appear and disappear.
I have a couple of hidden sidenotes in my own document and as I add and remove text they appear and disappear. It's easier to deal with using sidenotes, I can sometimes work around the issue by adding several blank lines to the end of a note but you don't have that option with footnotes.
I need to create a 4-pages PDF report. Page-1: Title and intro para; page-2: two charts with titles and notes; page-3: one table with titles and notes; page-4: two tables with titles and notes. A footnote at the bottom of last three pages. Also, page number and Sysdate at the bottom of each page. I have been struggling for more than 4 months for managing page breaks, the notes, footnotes, and titles. Is there any way to share the whole SAS program with someone and seek help?
Since the subsequent title is not displayed when there is more than one graphs or tables in one page, I will need to use ODS PDF TEXT= "^S=font_size= 20pt just=center fontweight=BoldTitle of tables or figures"; statements for the title of the subsequent graphs or tables.
