Hi,

In my recent visit to NE I had ample opportunity to interact and observe different communities.   I was witness to their proactive initiatives to tackle local problems.I observed the Jhum cultivation in its different phases of the cycle.
Here are my impressions. I am giving a link to a video clip and a write up.

Thank you very much Ravindraji,
It indeed is informative and educative. Thanks again for sharing.

I am also sharing a link with you all on a project we recently did in catchment area of Panshet and compared with similar area but with protection- Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary .

We were able to document and map the  level of degradation of forests due to shifting cultivation. The evidence is clear by change of forests types.

Please feel free to circulate among all you feel would make a difference. Conservation of forests in catchment areas of all the dams in Western Ghats is very critical if we want to have the sources of water protected.

May it be a Policy makers, The environmentalists or the common people need to work towards developing a strategy for protection of our forests and minimize such activities.

Best,
Shailaja

Dear Shailaja,

Thanks for sharing your work.

Policy planning cannot be left alone with the bureaucrats and politicians. Sometimes a knowledgeable and visionary bureaucrat (it is a vanishing species) may also be helpless in this system, which only sees short term gains and that too of few. Civil societies must intervene and I think Ecological Society is giving the necessary inputs.
