Is The Matrix Getting a Reboot? Here's What We Know So Far

The Matrix, the groundbreaking sci-fi film that revolutionized the genre and influenced countless other movies, video games, and fashion trends, is reportedly getting a reboot. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is in the early stages of developing a relaunched version of the 1999 cyberpunk classic, with Creed star Michael B. Jordan as the potential headliner.

But what does this mean for the fans of the original trilogy, which starred Keanu Reeves as Neo, the hacker who discovers that reality is a simulation controlled by machines? Will the reboot be a remake, a sequel, a prequel, or a spin-off? And will the Wachowski siblings, who wrote and directed the original films, be involved in any way?

Here's what we know so far about the rumored Matrix reboot:

The Wachowskis are not currently involved

One of the biggest questions surrounding the reboot is whether Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the visionary filmmakers behind The Matrix and its sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, will have any creative input or approval. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Wachowskis are not currently involved in the project, but Warner Bros. would want their blessing at the very least before moving forward.

The Wachowskis have not commented on the reboot news, but they have been busy with other projects in recent years, such as the Netflix series Sense8 and the film Jupiter Ascending. It is possible that they may join the reboot as producers or consultants, but it is unlikely that they will direct or write it.

Zak Penn is in talks to write the script

The person who is reportedly in charge of writing a treatment for the reboot is Zak Penn, a veteran screenwriter who has worked on several superhero movies, such as X-Men: The Last Stand, The Avengers, and Elektra. Penn has also written scripts for sci-fi films like Ready Player One and The Last Action Hero.

Penn has not confirmed his involvement in the reboot, but he has hinted at it on Twitter. He wrote: "All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT The Matrix. People who know Animatrix and the comics understand." He also added: "Can't comment yet except to say that the words 'reboot' and 'remake' were from an article. Let's stop responding to inaccurate news."

These tweets suggest that Penn may be working on a story that is not a direct remake of The Matrix, but rather a new entry in the franchise that explores a different aspect of the rich and complex world created by the Wachowskis.

Michael B. Jordan is rumored to star

The only actor who has been linked to the reboot so far is Michael B. Jordan, who rose to fame with his roles in Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther. Jordan is reportedly in talks to play a major role in the reboot, but it is unclear if he will be replacing Reeves as Neo or playing a different character.

Jordan has not commented on the rumor, but he has expressed his admiration for The Matrix in the past. In an interview with GQ in 2015, he said: "I love Keanu Reeves. I love Speed. I love Point Break. I love The Matrix. Those are movies that I watched over and over again."

Jordan is not the only actor who has shown interest in The Matrix. Keanu Reeves himself had indicated that he would be willing to return for another Matrix movie if the Wachowskis were involved. He told Yahoo Movies in 2017: "They would have to write it and direct it. And then weâd see what the story is, but yeah
