It looks like Hillary is going the victim route again and pandering to
the sympathy vote. I don't think it will work this time.

First lady again denounces anti-Semitic charge

Updated 7:46 PM ET July 17, 2000
By Ellen Wulfhorst

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Controversy over an accusation that she once made
an anti-Semitic insult dogged Hillary Rodham Clinton who, while denying
the charge, predicted Monday more such accusations lie in the days
ahead.

Fending off a claim in a new book that she once called a former campaign
aide of her husband President Clinton "a Jew bastard," Clinton told
reporters: "Apparently there's a whole warehouse of insults that they're
going to be putting into motion for this campaign."

"It's only July," the first-lady-turned-Senate-candidate said, sounding
world-weary at a late afternoon news conference.

"There's going to be a lot more of this," she said. "It's sort of hard
to imagine what will happen, but I won't be surprised, unfortunately."

Clinton spent what under normal circumstances would have been a staid
"first lady" event, visiting Ellis Island to support preservation of the
immigration landmark, under a barrage of questions about the alleged
remark.

It is contained in the book, "State of the Union: Inside the Complex
Marriage of Bill and Hillary Clinton," by former National Enquirer
reporter Jerry Oppenheimer, due out this week.

The book claims she hurled the insult at Paul Fray, a former campaign
manager for her husband, because she blamed Fray for her husband's
failed 1974 race for Congress.

"I can only state unequivocally it did not happen," she said. "Any
reasonble person looking at the evidence in this case would conclude
there's no credibility on the other side."

The book attributes the story to Fray and to his wife, Mary Lee. The
only other person supposedly within earshot, campaign aide Neill
McDonald, confirmed the story over the weekend, according to New York's
Daily News.

The Daily News report prompted the president to contact the newspaper
and deny the remark, the paper reported on Monday.

"In 29 years, my wife has never, ever uttered an ethnic or racial slur
against anybody, ever," the president was quoted as saying.

At a briefing in Thurmont, Maryland, for reporters covering the Camp
David summit, White House spokesman Joe Lockhart said: "We live in a
world where the National Enquirer mentality has hijacked journalism, and
that has become an issue in New York. And these are scurrilous and
untrue charges and the president wanted to set that straight.

"Obviously, the president probably has more experience than any living
human being about how deep in the gutter some people can go," Lockhart
said.

The report also prompted the first lady to take the unusual step of
holding a news conference outside her home in suburban Chappaqua, New
York, Sunday.

Clinton noted that she wasn't surprised, given the negative tone in
recent fund-raising letters sent out by her Republican opponent, Rep.
Rick Lazio, of suburban Long Island.

"This is a particularly offensive false charge, but I've been the
recipient of alot of them in the past," she said. "This one really cut
to the core of who I am and what I believe."

The furor hits a sore spot in the Clinton campaign, which has had
difficulty building solid support among New York Jews, who are expected
to play a significant role in the November election.

Relations hit a low point late last year, when Clinton paid a visit to
the West Bank and sat silently while the wife of Palestinian President
Yasser Arafat in a speech charged Israel with pouring poisonous waste
into the Gaza Strip.

A poll taken last week showed Clinton with 54 percent of the Jewish
vote, and Lazio with 34 percent.

Her support among Jews was weaker when her first opponent, New York City
Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, was still in the race.

Giuliani enjoyed strong support among New York Jews, but he pulled out
of the contest in May, citing his prostate cancer.

Ironically, last summer, a Jewish newspaper in New York revealed that
the first lady had Jewish roots.

The paper revealed that Clinton's maternal grandmother, after divorcing
her first husband who was Clinton's grandfather, married a Jewish man,
Max Rosenberg, in 1933.

Not by them, but apparently by a man who has admitted wronging Hillary in the
past. Another soap opera for the media.

Isn't the timing of this allegation interesting? Somehow, I doubt the Jewish
voters in New York will be affected by it - those that didn't like Hillary will
vote for Lazio, and those that like Hillary will vote for her.

Isn't anything that may have occured more than 25 years ago off-limits, or does

Ex-Clinton Aide: She Said It and She Knows It
Tuesday, July 18, 2000

If Hillary Clinton doesn't remember hurling an anti-Semitic slur 26
years ago, she has a "selective memory," President Clinton's former
campaign manager told Fox News Channel in an exclusive interview
Tuesday.

Paul Fray, who ran Bill Clinton's unsuccessful 1974 congressional
campaign in Arkansas, said, "Sure she did," when asked if the first lady
angrily called him a "f---ing Jew bastard" 26 years ago.

"I think they've got a little bit of what you call 'selective memory,'"
Fray added, referring to the president and first lady, who have
vehemently denied the accusation.

Fray described his relationship with Mrs. Clinton as "like water and oil
— we don't mix," and added that working with her was "an ordeal and
experience beyond your comprehension and mine."

Later in the day, in a televised interview, Fray said, "She didn't agree
with some of my 'tactics and style' and consequently we had a lot of
friction and it escalated to some pretty sad things being said between
the two of us."

But Fray said he doesn't want to fight with her through the media or
bring down her Senate campaign.

"I don't want to see her get killed over this whole (incident) that
happened 26 years ago. I mean, what relevance is that?," he said. "This
is something between her and I, and we need to meet face-to-face and see
if we can't get this thing resolved."

Fray's wife, Mary Lee, who said she witnessed the altercation, told
FOXNews.com on Monday that Hillary not only used an anti-Semitic slur,
she shouted it so loudly "it rattled the walls."

"It was very clear," she said. "Bill Clinton's face became white as a
ghost."

But the president and first lady both deny Hillary made the remark,
which is reported in a new book, State of a Union: Inside the Complex

Marriage of Bill and Hillary Clinton, by former National Enquirer

reporter Jerry Oppenheimer. The book is being published by
HarperCollins, a subsidiary of News Corporation, which also owns
FOXNews.com.

"She might have called him a bastard," the president said in an
interview in Monday's New York Daily News. "I wouldn't rule that out.
She's never claimed that she was pure on profanity. But I've never heard
her tell a joke with an ethnic connotation."

Mrs. Clinton angrily denied making the ethnic slur, saying the report
was "absolutely false."

"I wanted to unequivocally state it never happened," the first lady said
Sunday.

But Paul Fray said he is willing to take a lie detector test or truth
serum to help prove his claim.

Oppenheimer quotes Fray, who says he is one-eighth Jewish from his
father's side of the family, as claiming that Mrs. Clinton called him
the name at campaign headquarters after Bill Clinton lost the 1974
election.

A third person, Neil McDonald, also claims to have heard the obscenity
as he stood outside the room. Previous biographies have mentioned the
argument but none mentioned any slur.

Fray says this isn't the first time he's gone public with the anecdote.
"I let some friends of mine know about it, and I have talked to
different journalists down the years — and they just sort of let it go
at that," he said. "It's no big deal to them. Well, it is a big deal to
me."

Gail Sheehy, author of the book Hillary's Choice, said that she had
heard the story of the alleged anti-Semitic comment several years ago
from Fray's wife. But Sheehy said she left it out of her book because it
was "off the wall. It was totally without credibility."

Reaction Around New York

Leaders of New York's Jewish community lined up on opposite sides of the
debate.

Representatives of conservative Jewish groups held a news conference
Monday outside Clinton's midtown campaign office to criticize her.

"There is no statute of limitations for racism or anti-Semitism or
bigotry," said state Assemblyman Dov Hikind, a leader of Brooklyn's
Orthodox Jewish community.

But the Anti-Defamation League defended Mrs. Clinton against the
allegations.

The ADL said in a statement that it takes Clinton at her word that the
accusation is false. "Her public record shows no evidence of anti-
Semitism, and we do not believe her to hold negative views about Jews,"
it said.

American Jewish Committee executive director David Harris agreed,
adding: "The allegations are highly suspect. Suspect because of their
source, suspect because they come 26 years after the alleged incident
and suspect because they come amid a heated Senate campaign."

Rep. Rick Lazio, R-N.Y., Clinton's opponent in the New York Senate race,
said: "I think this is a very disturbing comment. This is sort of a 'she
said, they said' situation. ... I don't know who to believe. New Yorkers
don't know who to believe. And therein lies a good deal of the problem."

Lazio added, "It's up to the voters to decide."

No, by *Jewish* standards. If the "Jewish ancestor" was close
enough to his generation and near enough to his immediate family
Israel would `recognize' him as a Jew for the purposes of *Right
of Return*, and he would be given Israeli citizenship. *That*
would technically make him a Jew. (A grandfather or grandmother
would qualify him afaik.)
