Hello,
I have a problem running control.exe. When executed it opens an explorer
window rather than the control panel. I have been changing many reg entries
and apps on my system and can't identify the source.
Any thoughts?

(I don't have access to all those USENET newsgroups but will leave them
listed in case this somehow gets propagated to them.)
With WDU you could possibly be confused by the Explorer bar.
E.g. in Control Panel Alt-V,E,o can toggle the Folders bar on
and off. Or perhaps View as Web Page is doing something
peculiar? (Alt-V,W)
Otherwise I would try an IE Repair using
control appwiz.cpl
